Surprising revelation from Activision (formerly known as Blizzard)

WoW.com forums

WoW.eu forums

Huge complains, this is a change in game philosophy from the best designers (in my opinion), that is worrying. It does seem that we are heading for WoWBook or WoWVille.

So far I have cancelled all my preorders from Activision, including cataclysm and SC2, and if they do not backtrack on this one, I will cancel my WoW account.

If you choose to use RealID in game then it already shows your real name

The controversey here is that in game its only shown to the people that you add as a RealID friend, if you add them just by character then they dont see your name or your other characters

However RealID is being forced on the forum users, it will be instead an option to display a character name as well, but your real name will always be shown. It wont be in effect until they move to new forums for SC2 or cataclysm but still its rather worrying

Main concerns seem to be
-Some people just plain prefer to play as a character, female players for example letting others think they are guys just so they dont get the OMG OMG ITS A GURL response and an army of weirdos whispering them
-If someone has an issue with you in game them then using that to go find you on facebook and misuse whatever information they get hold of
-The forums are google indexed, so if you apply for a job and the new employer googling you and using the reason that you play a video game as a reason to decide to not give you the job.

Got to laugh. I'm glad I have quit wow a long time ago now, but I keep an eye on whats going on... and it's slowly getting worse and worse.

I pity that Blizz employee Micah Whipple who "came out" first. He doesn't seem to be embracing the whole Facebook intergration thing though as he's now privatised his info completely. I hope he likes pizza, must've been sent about a million so far I imagine :)

Looks like SC2 (if I still get it, due to other issues) will be going on a new fake Bnet account.

Not good. Not good at all.

I'll still be buying and playing SC2, but i'll use a false name for the account, and I certainly won't be opting into RealID. Honestly, I just see no need for it.

So from now on, no females would dare to venture onto the boards, normal folk wouldn't want their personal details over the forums with so many petty idiots and those who troll won't be put off at all.

Thats a very good point... there was a couple of girls in my old gaming clan, but they hid behind an avatar online so that people treated them the same as everyone else. They just wanted to get on playing the game not have people being weird coz they were a girl.

Pretty badly thought out decision.

This will promote more violence when someone kills them ingame or flames/trolls them - real name, search for their address, let's commit a crime.

Very bad idea :(

At first, when I heard about it, I thought it was a clever idea as then people would stop arguing etc.

However, it has many more downsides than upsides...

Firstly - although it would stop arguing... I think that's a downside! I just see it as online "banter" :p But now it will be reduced because some people may think they don't want to say something because now they know my full name

Secondly - No girls will ever want to post on the forums anymore (Unless they love the attension) :p

Problem is... you might say something entirely innocent - but some weird person will completely get the "goat" over it - find your real name... find your info... come stalk you IRL or whatever - or worse get the wrong person from the name and mess with the wrong IRL person.

My issue with it is that a lot of people I know play WoW to "escape" (for want of a better word) the real world for a while and be "Character XYZ". Soon as they do this, its basically facebook with raiding groups.

From what I have been reading on the WoW forums, I think a good percentage of people will either A) change there name on the details of their account (therefore making this RealID pointless) or B) quit the game.

People always say stuff like that but I bet a large percentage of those making noise about it will do C) Absolutely nothing. ;)

It doesn't seem like the best idea by any means but I do think some of you are blowing this out of proportion a bit by suggesting it'll get you murdered.

This is ****ing hilarious, do none of you realise how many people in the world have the same name? Dozens! Just type your name into facebook and have a look, and then remember that the majority of people dont use it.

And I mean really, if this sort of thing scares you then a phonebook must be a thing of true terror to you. It is just your name, it can be easily found out in many, many ways, the fact your now known by it online makes little difference, i've never been afraid of handing it out anyway. My name is Jacob Lupton, do your worst.

So even worse.... when someone with the same name as you ****** someone off in WoW they get the wrong person and start giving you grief... take 2 seconds to think through some of the possibile outcomes and you'll see just how hideous the idea is.

Someone can't take being ganked so goes around to dish out some real justice.....how long before this happens. Not the smartest move ever made.
