RealID to show Real Name - WoW, SC2 ...

"Hello everyone,

As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

Mike Morhaime
CEO & Cofounder
Blizzard Entertainment"

The fact that this stupid idea came so far means it's unlikely to be gone for good

Never say never :)

well they had to after the backlash :p have to wonder who actually had thought through it and still believed it could possibly be a good idea..

One thing I found interesting was this:
We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard game

Now call me a luddite but for me gaming has always tended to be a form of escapism, it's about getting away into another world, not one which has some kind of social network that lets your mum msg you that dinner is ready from her phone. Furthermore, in case it has escaped blizzards attention, gaming has done pretty well with it's own networks over the years, whether that be ICQ, IRC, forums, xfire/steam etc. And those in themselves can be somewhat escapist, when I'm online I sometimes just want to be "HangTime", not the real me, I don't want to worry about saying something that'll make me look stupid at work the next day.

At the end of the day, if you want some kind of social contact with people online, you are not going to say to them "hey, look me up on Blizzard RealID xyz", you are going to say "here's my email/msn/facebook/whatever".

Sounds about spot on to me.

Their reversal still don't sit pretty with me tbh, yesterday they still could not care less if I posted, in fact that would have been my only option to stay out of google rankings but now, now its a big welcome back sorry we threw you into the fire just there, its okay only your jacket got burned.
By the way all that stuff about revealing your name, we didn't really mean it....
Well, we might have really meant it but we can't even put up a post to rule it out in future, so lets just say we forget about it for now and you give us some more of that nice subscription money, that should allow us to cover the testing costs for Cata without having to rethink our fiscal year budget and actually let our investors know what we buried ourselves 2.3k pages deep in html pages over something so trivial as a name.

I'll be honest, 5 years playing on and off, I think it'll be more off now.
Staying cancelled for the time being.

it's probably only being put off while they modify the code not to show gm's/admin/mods/community managers names ;)

What is there against people giving false names ?

On various sites I don't want them to have my datails I'm fn: ''Noneofyour'' ln:''business'' or ''Nospam'' ''please'' or something similar...

They have your credit card details?

If you get your account compromised your ID won't match the fake name you gave either, so you won't be able to get your account back.

I have not bought anything which has anything to do with activision since that mw2 rubbish. And I never will ever again even if they clean up their act. I won't even buy EA stuff anymore even though they are trying to fix their hellish failures which they caused over the past number of years. They failed, no more sales from me - at least not until I have money I can throw away.

WoW I feel is a good action game but not such a good rpg (you level too fast and even gear too fast despite people who never played a real mmo say the gearing is terribly slow). And the quests might as well be randomly generated. WoW barely has any actual content these days. It is also far too easy to make money in WoW and the professions might as well not have to be levelled.

It was amazing in classic, it has become bad now, I hate the "direction" they are taking with the game now.

At the moment I'm just making a joke of it by making a rediculously overpowered twink on a classic account and wrecking battlegrounds :p
