Really annoying problem.

Yes they are in the 2nd and 4th from CPU, it was one of the things i double checked, I had the ryzen computer working until i changed motherboards(unfortunately i threw it out) which was why i was certain it was the motherboard.

i have downloaded memtest86 do i use rufus to get it on the flash drive or do i just extract it and put it straight onto the flash drive?

you can download a USB stick version or a CD version, if you downloaded the USB version, just plug in your flash drive, double click the exe file and follow the instructions, it will do the rest for you.

Now i am totally confused, downloaded latest memtest86 and it freezes after about 2 min 30 sec and i cant tell if its the CPU or the ram that's at fault. Well one thing is certain, I can return the motherboard and get my money back because i get the same result with either. Replacement Ram next because its cheaper than a new CPU, and it wont be wasted if it is the CPU that's the problem because i can put it in the other two slots and double my ram.
This old computer is actually doing quite well, i nearly donated it, good job i didn't.

Both should be under warranty, send them both back as one or the other is faulty and get them to swap them.

Unfortunately i bought the ram and CPU as part of a bundle over 12 months ago when Ryzen first came out and i ran them for at least 3 months before the motherboard went bad and i ditched it and got another motherboard (Gigabyte Aorus GA-AX370-Gaming 5) thats when my problems started but i shelved it because of financial and other reasons. Its only now that i can do something about it. The money from the returned motherboard will almost pay for the ram so that has to be the next logical step, eliminating possible causes one step at a time, i must get there in the end.

Not sure if I'm allowed to do this, so sorry in advance, but I have a Ryzen 7 1700 for sale at the moment, she's a pretty good one, does 3.9ghz at 1.375v and never had an issue running my ram at 3200mhz so I know the memory controller is good, pm me for details if you're interested, originally brought from OCuk at Ryzen first release last year.

contact corsair, they are very good and helpful. it'll cost a few quid to send the ram back to them for testing but almost certainly if it is duff they will replace it - i think corsair ram comes with a lifetime guarantee (could be wrong though)

+1 pretty sure the cpu has a 3 year warranty too, doesn't matter that it came in a bundle, that's just something the shop you've brought it from has put together

Now i am really tearing my hair out!!!!! after putting new ram in and still the same problem

System:-
CPU Ryzen 5 1600 & NZXT water cooler
Motherboard Gigabyte Aoros GA-AX370-Gaming 5
Ram DDR4 2x4GB Corsair vengeance LPX 2400mhz
PSU Seasonic Series X 750 watt
Hard drive Samsung 850 evo 500GB SSD
video card Geoforce GTX 980 ti ICHILL
Case cooler master haf xb evo case

Problem cant install OS.(win10) tried via CD and USB even tried to install linux. No problem accessing BIOS and have updated it to latest bios.

Have substituted Motherboard no change so its not the motherboard.

Corsair have replaced the ram no change(i feel quite guilty about that) so not the ram

Disconnected the SSD and substituted with a large Toshiba SATA Drive, no difference

The Seasonic is quite new and was powering my other computer no problem

Video card has nothing to do with the problem

case has nothing to do with the problem.

So its the CPU then!! any comments or other diagnosis appreciated.

Yup, sounds like the CPU, very rare, but could have a bad memory controller in it, send it back.

Hi Guys, Just to finish this thread off, It was a ****** CPU.
I suppose i have done alright by it all. I have had my Ram replaced by those nice people at Corsair although there was nothing wrong with it!
I got a replacement CPU from AMD today and i am running it at 4.1ghz. The old one was struggling at 3.8ghz so i have got a far better bit of silicon.
I am really happy with my system now, and although i am a gamer I don't play AAA titles so this will do me for a couple of years, but i will probably upgrade the Ram before Xmas as its only 2400 mhz and 2 x 4 gig sticks, I am looking at 1440 monitors but i'll only jump if a bargain comes my way.
Anyways back to lurking now, unless something else untowards happens. So BYEeee
