***Admin could you please delete my 2 previous threads in general hardware because I have been giving the wrong information - my apologies***

SO basically my computer is screwed up and i believe the route of the problem is the motherboard having had problems in the past with it. I tried to overclock it (bare in mind I had comfortably hit 3.6ghz on this rig in the past) because I recently formatted and since have only been able to boot up if I clear the cmos. Now it will turn on 1/20 times from pressing the power button after clearing the cmos.

I have since bought and new battery which made no difference what so ever.

My plan was to flash the bios/cmos but when I make the changes in bios for boot priority to boot from USB in order to get my p.c to turn on again I have to clear the cmos thus changing the order of boot devices. This in turn means I have no clue what to do.

Am i missing anything obvious?

My other plan is to get a new motherboard, however I cannot format my hardrive because I cannot boot from DVD - again very annoying.

Please help me. I have googled everything regarding cmos/flashing/bios and nothing has worked.

My set up is an Abit IP35 Pro motherboard, GelL ultra low latency ram (4 x 1GB) and an intel Q6600.

It has to be the motherboard because my computer is working now but its very annoying having to spend 20 minutes trying to turn it on. I also want to clock this rude boy again :D.

I had problems in the past because I forgot to use the studs on the motherboard when installing it into a new case - stupid I know but i was tired. I somehow got it working.

Thank you

Might have well caused some damage which is now surfacing.

If you can get one the same (same model exactly) you'll be fine as the drivers within the OS will be the same, if you get a different one then you might be able to just plug and pray, but it's best if you DO format/reinstall as your old drivers will still be cluttering up your windows install and will slow the system down significantly.

Your windows install would still work with a new board so you could worry about the OS re-install after you get hardware put together.

o right thought it might conflict being a different motherboard when i loaded up but aslong as i go straight to bios and boot from the cd it should be ok

with the exact same board you should be fine. if its a different chipset board it could be a painful process to get it up and running. XP was anyway, not sure about W7 if you are using that.

either way you can also boot from a linux live cd and transfer your files to a usb and then format. or even repartition and put your files there whilst you format

If you can get it to boot into windows, you should (in theory) be able to use driver sweeper or something similar to strip out the old drivers and prepare a clean OS for your new drivers.

- If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me lol

HD's are so cheap now -why dont you buy a new HD as well, that way you can do a new install of Windows on the new HD?
You would obviously then be able to use your existing drive for extra storage, witho ut needing to worry about formatting it.
