Really stupid question: Do I need a new rear tyre?

I've had the rear on for nearly 6000 miles now, which in my mind means that it might be time to replace it. I took a look last night and saw the following:

Am I down to the limit on the wear level indicator thingie?

*chicken strips* lol

I would defo replace that, wouldn't displace standing water all that good either.

Pffft. Chicken Schmicken.

Torn between getting another one the same (Continental Sport Attack) or given that I spend most of my days on dual carriageways going for the new Road Pilots. Also need to find somewhere cheap around London who'll fit...

I dont see chicken strips? Certainly not the blue haze of usual chicken strips lol, just a lot of motorway miles

And yes change it, I had the same on mine and after a TD it was showing the metal strip inners :p

Minimum depth for motorcycle tread is 1mm , that look less than that (I'd go with 0mm) so unless you want to get a tug and a fine from the boys in blue I'd get a new one pronto!

Isn't that just the wear level indicator showing 0mm, rather than the actual tread? There's still tread on the tyre all round

If you look at the point above the wear indicator it appears to be almost flush with the wear indicator , this is the point I would consider bald.

consider yourself lucky to get that sort of mileage , I need a new rear and have only covered just over 2k.

I'm with Rabid, 2300miles and i'm about half a mil off the indicator...

Think i may be a little harsh on the throttle

Most tyres will go "off" near or around the end of their serviceable life. At 6k and going by your picture I'd say that one has a good chance of being there at the "off" stage where it will begin to feel just not right and a wee bit marbley, tracking excessively over white lines etc. In which case, irrespective of the amount of tread left, I'd be replacing it.

Michelin Pilot Power 2CT's are the win, btw.

To be honest, I've noticed a little skittishness on the throttle and in some bends recently. I'm not an experienced rider, and I've only got ~85bhp, so thought I was just imagining it. Maybe. Maybe not.

Pilot Power's over the Road Pilots? Not convinced given the motorway miles I do, and my propensity to ride just as much in hail/pouring rain as in blazing sun.... They are cheaper though, can get a rear for £120, whereas the RP is £130.

+1 on the Pilot power 2CTs

not the cheapest of tires, but great in the wet as well as the dry.

Oooh, I'm torn now. Was set on the Road Pilots but seeing a lot of love for the PP's on the net.

What will probably happen is my sensible head will rule over and I'll get the Road's (I don't track the bike) but I'll have fun agonising over it in the meantime. :)

That said, if I were to go for a sporty tyre again, I'd probably stick with the Conti SportAttacks - they've been brilliant.

Metzeler M5's

How would you rate them?

I myself have Michelin Pilot power 2CT's and can honestly say there probably the best I've tried, and I've tried most makes over the last 14 years.

growse

the Pilot Power 2 CT's are hard wearing in the middle and softer/sticky on the outside to aid cornering so no matter if you have 80 or 180 bhp are a very good choice fro the commute as well as a sunday blast and trackdays.

Too late, head won. Got the Road Pilot :)

Will give the 2CT's a lookin net time, maybe when I need to change the front.

Bloody lovely when hot, and they heat up quickly, but the front is VERY heavy when cold, very reluctant to turn. and the fact i'm at 2400 miles and nor far off the limit...

What mileage are we seeing on the 2CT's?

I see about 3k out of a rear 2CT. RSV Mille with quite a few performance mods, fast road use plus the odd commute. ;)

I've used original Pilot Powers and then 2CT's on it for about 8 years, tried a few other makes but can't see past the Mich's. :)
