Really worried - Uni.

Hey Alex bud, long time no speak! Glandular fever sucks, my sister had it a few years back, it can last a fair time. Like previously stated you've done everything you can just try and get it done, if you course leader is understanding just explain to them. Also speak to you student centre or something they should be able to give you more accurate advice as to where you stand.

Calm down and concentrate on getting better. Worst thing you can do is get stressed and delay your recovery.

The absolute worst case scenario here is that you have to retake a year. While not exactly party and streamers, it's not the end of the world. And that's the worst case scenario. Keep your tutor updated and only go back when you're ready. You can sort things out then; universities are used to this sort of thing.

Ive been told by my uni not to worry and that everything will be ok. They said the best option would be to see how I do in the exams and if it isnt good then they said they would let me do the year again.

But Ill have to start all over again and do all the modules that ive passed already again.

Glandular fever is the worst illness I have ever had, throat was at the point of completely closing over so nearly had to go to hospital.

Thing with glandular fever is there is no way to tell how long it will last! The really sore and uncomfortable part should not last too long, but the long term side effects can go on for months!

I ended up getting extensions and also was allowed to repeat the exams - as my first attempt.

The uni will be on your side, they want you to do well, it is in there interest. All the paperwork and checks are just to weed out the fakers!

Would not stress about it !

big end of the world, i dont want to fall behind.
How will you fall behind?

This is uni, not primary school. You won't be the big dunce in the room full of younger kids. You'll simply be someone who had to intercalate a year due to illness. You won't be the first, or the last, and no-one thinks any the worse of someone for it. You can still hang out with the same people you knew before, you just might end up making new friends in your final year (assuming everybody leaves). Is that really a bad thing?

My friend had to do the same on our course, finished a year later, got a first, and now has a decent job in Norwich. Nothing lost.

I think it makes less sense to push yourself towards finishing work when you're not 100% and won't be able to dedicate all your time to it.

Dunno if it helps, but my mate struggled with a bad back, got a note off the doctor, and managed to 'suspend' his second year, picking up when the next year started. Giving him a good 6-8months to recover before starting his 2nd year again and carrying on.

What year of Uni are you in?

Second.

i think i may have sorted it, they said i have to submit a "mitigated circumstances" form, this will get me through to the second year after they have visited the board from hull, this gives me time to submit my work before second year. since they have all supporting doctors forms, and certificates.

I can't really give any advice on the Uni side of things. Just some reassurance that whilst Glandular fever really does knock you sideways, it does definitely very much depend on the individual. I was lucky and was only really ill with it for 2 weeks, with one week either side where I felt rough but not too bad. When it was at it's worst though I did nothing except take it easy and concentrate on getting better and made sure I didn't stress about it.

Try and stay positive and look after yourself :)

Just to update this thread:

Panic over i think ive been given mitigated circumstances by the exam board due to the glandular fever, and have to submit my work before august, i have 3-4 assigments left, so i get to enjoy my summer too!

Thanks for all the kind words by the way folks!

glandular fever

I actually suffered from the same thing last year right in the middle of uni exams. I didn't go to the doc's until the day after my last exam due to my thinking it was just a bad case of the flu. Infact the only reason I went to the Doc's was because I woke up at the crack of noon unable to breath properly as my throat had swollen up :(

I wish I had gone to the doc's earlier as I struggled through my exams and did a lot worse than I was expecting

Bit of an update:

Work is all in and finished, all passed really well... exam boards in a week, so there gonna obviously tell them the works complete.

And supposebly im on board for a 2-1, which im happy with :)

Thanks for all the kind words.

I got reall ill at uni and nearly missed all of my exams in the first year. Slipped in a mitagating circumstances form and all was well, managed to pass all the exams anyway but my marks got moderated kindly.

I got quite friendly with the go between of the students and school and she was embarassed telling me how many of these she gets and some of the reasons. She reckoned about 50% were people with hangovers missing deadlines and blagging the very understanding student doctors to give them a doctors note.
