Stationary in the ST at the beginning of our only dual carriage way, waiting for the queue so that I might pull into the next lane and all of a sudden a Focus shunts me up the rear end at about 30MPH.

Rear crash bar has bent and actually pushed into the subframe/boot floor behind it.

Been to the hospital as a bystander called the police, luckily both Lauren and I are OK, just a bit of whiplash :/

Any tips on where to go from here? Do I just give Admiral a call and give them the other parties details?

:(

I think you are meant to ring the other parties insurer, try not to get yours involved if possible.

Did you not mention something the other day about some ST500's missing the badge, most likely due to crashes?

other partys insurance co. will automatically accept liability with a rear end impact usually

Get in touch with the other insurance co and claim from them directly. I avoid helphire out of principal - they push premiums up by ripping insurance companies off with stupid charges (just like most accident management companies in fact, not a specific helphire thing)

I doubt it was a 30mph impact, there would be a lot more damage than that!

Glad to hear you are both ok. Whippy compo?

I'm not really interested in a free hire car, I have other cars I can use and I've seen people get stung by them before.

Its also likely I'll have two personal injury claims, as well as claims for two items that were damaged in the car - how do I proceed with these? Is it best to sort the car out now, and go to a no win no fee type solicitor to handle the rest?

From experience with my one and only accident courtesy to being hit in the rear whilst stationary at a set of traffic lights, my insurance company waived the excess and sorted it all out :)

i was rear ended a few years ago. I claimed directly off the other persons insurance and used a legal firm who specialzed in injury compensation for the whiplash.

Same here, rear ended whilst stationary at traffic lights, it was all off the other parties insurance but mine (privilage) were great, they sorted everything from solicitors who sorted both vehicle depreciation claim (2.5k) and whiplash (2k) as well as fixing the car. Never effected my no claims bonus or premium.

Thanks guys, Its great to hear of people's real experiences - I always thought I'd know what to do, but when the shock of it all sets in, I was very unsure. Its lucky I had half a clue though as he didn't.

They sent a valuation engineer out to inspect it once it was all fixed who wrote a report stating what the damage would do to it's potencial value, he said it would have de valued the car significantly and we settled on £2500. This was back in 2000 and I've still got the car so in reality it didn't devalue it at all.

I definitely need to look into that, as given the damage to the boot floor, it'll always be easy to tell that its been rear-ended.

Really ?

So when you get a quote for insurance these days and they ask you if you have had an accident in the last 3 years regardless of fault you say no ? Because if so your being a naughty boy ;) My insurance has gone up by between 100 - 200 pounds a year for the last 3 years because of a lorry tyre that hit my windscreen whilst i was driving down the motorway

A completely non fault accident which was paid for by the other party’s insurance BUT apparently I’m now at a higher risk of having another accident :p

In regards to not using helphire or europa out of "principle" ha ha ha they have had my pants down for the last 5 years and I’ve NEVER EVER made a fault claim. My insurance bill since i started driving must be near 10 grand therefore I’m going to make sure I get the best service possible.

Well it was in 2000 like I said, but no I never lied to them, how could I stayed with priv up until 2008 when we changed to more than, they knew we had, had a non fault claim.

Of course you will, good how you know this before you know if you've got anything more than just a bit of ache and before you've suffered a penny of loss of earnings for 'injury'. First thing everyone thinks of these days is personal injury. Money wont make the ache go away.

It's about time the whole thing was stopped unless you receive a life changing injury IMHO, crappy whippy compo claims cost insurers an obscene amount of money.

You were rear ended, it'll hurt for a few weeks perhaps, unless you've been seriously injured just man up.

I can say that mine has caused me no end of bother ever since, I've had several pysio sessions in the 10 years since and have a weakend vertebrae in my neck, about once or twice a year since I have periods of maybe 2 weeks of intense pain from it and would gladly hand back the money I got at the time to have it fixed.
