It has been very noitacble when I’ve spotted Galaxy S8 and S9 users that none of them use the fingerprint reader on the back of the device. I’ve seen a combination of pin code security and no security at all.

Do you think the poorly placed fingerprint scanner is the reason for this?

None? Friend has one and says it feels natural to him.

I've used one before, some xiomai phone. I prefer the front fingerprint scanner and did use the pin more often than the scanner.

I personally prefer the rear scanner. I had it on a Leeco S3 x626 and it felt very natural, pick up the phone and your finger was more or less there. I know have a front scanner on a Meizu m6 note, works well but to me feels more awkward

It's in a terrible place on the s8, so I don't doubt it's the reason you arent seeing people use them more. I unlock mine with a code more than the scanner, but i still have the scanner there for google and samsung pay authentication so i do use it, its just such a pain in the arse.

Don't know about those devices in particular, but I used rear scanners on the Nexus 5X and a bunch of Chinese devices, including two Redmi Notes. The rear position is nice, because thats where your index finger can naturally fall. The front scanner means bringing your thumb down to and holding your phone in a slightly awkward way. The plus of the front scanner however is the ability to unlock your phone if its resting on your desk without having to pick it up.

It's too small on both phones. I rarely use mine on the S8+ and instead use the Iris scanner, which confuses a lot of people at first. I certainly miss my 6P's rear scanner, which was superb to use as mentioned in the post above.

I use it all the time on my S8. But I think without the case I have which helps me find it, I would struggle to find it. I came from a Nexus 6p which had a rear sensor too, so quite used to it now.

I've got the S8, and agree the fingerprint sensor is poorly placed. I like to have a case around mine which makes using the sensor very awkward, if not unusable.
I take quite a few photos, so even without a case I don't want to be smudging up the camera lens trying to unlock my phone using the sensor right next to the lens.

The redeeming feature for the S8 is the iris detection unlock. It works pretty well, unless out in direct sunlight, can scan through my glasses, and has even managed through sunglasses before. I've got it setup to scan as soon as the phone is turned on and works well for me :)

My Pixel 2 has it on the rear and I use it 99% of the time, pick the phone up and my finger is already pretty much on the scanner.
Only time I don't use it is if my phones on my desk.

I wouldn't buy a phone with front fingerprint scanner. Rear is the only logical place since you're already holding the device with your finger resting at the back. Plus fingerprint gestures - what would be the point with front scanner, you're already poking around front screen?

My 6P one was in a nice place, not too high so was comfortable to use As soon as I grab the phone, my finger is instantly over it. The S8 one is in an awkward place, and the S9 is still a little too high for me.

I was wondering about this, presumably with a front finger print scanner, you'd use your thumb instead and your thumb is generally over that area..?

Rear scanner on the P9 is very well placed, but if you use a wallet style flip case, it's covered up when you flip the case, so it becomes more awkward, I'd say a lot depends on what style case you want.

This is my first phone with a finger print scanner and I love it on my Huawei P8 lite.

I put it in my pocket so when I go to get it the finger print scanner (on the back) is ready for my finger, when I get the phone out it's unlocked.

Totally agree, just feels more natural, and to use my front button I have to lower my hold on the phone to press it

I’ve gone from an S7E (front) to P2XL (rear). I’ve got to be honest, the front one was probably more convenient in the grand scheme, because it was usable whether in your hand or on a desk, although to be fair the P2XL is probably more accurate and faster but thats just advances in tech. Although with the rise of bezel-less phones, I suspect the front one will return once they master the art of building them into the display.
