Rearing Animals

No maintenance apart from feeding them tbh

Cleaning, letting them in/out, giving them any medical care e.g. the mite powder, try to stop them getting broody etc. I'd agree they're fairly simple to look after but not that they're no hassle - if you go away for even a weekend you've got to find someone who can let them in and out which can be an inconvenience.

Ours pretty much look after themselves, but I suppose I am comparing them to horses, sheep, cows and pigs.

My family used to have some chickens, in addition to what has already mentioned, they were extremely scared of neighbourhood cats which caused them to make a huge noise. We had to get rid of them eventually as it wasn't fair on them.

Grew up with chicken cats and dogs. So yes would recommend it if you have space and are prepared to look after them. They can bring a lot of "joy"? to your life, dogs are very loyal, cats are a bit moody and chicken are just scatty.

Would the chickens need pet insurance?

No animals require pet insurance.

If a chicken falls ill, in that it requires medical attention then wring its neck and buy a new one. Chickens are not expensive to buy.

Alternatively if you have a cockerel, you can have chicks and keep/sell them.
