Reasons for deciding on Intel or AMD

toying with the subject of a new build but think It will be early 2025 when I pull the trigger my i5-10400f is still working fine but fancy a new case and shiny bits

Do people take company lines or do people buy based on needs (gamer, content creator, etc).

During Covid I spent a lot to game and went AMD but now I am thinking of upgrading again.

New AMD or new Intel.

Anyone got a preference ?

I been really pleased with my 14900k system so far, But i wanted it for more then just gaming so i went intel

For me I went with and, but mostly because I've always had an affinity with them since the Athlon days.

Intel's business practices put me off them, but this time round it was purely because I couldn't get my head around the sockets and motherboards Nd numbering systems of intel. And the more I looked the better and looked, I only do word processing, internet and games, and the AMD system was overall cheaper than intel for the products I was choosing at least and mostly better or on par in my use cases.

If I couldn't buy AMD I would rather go ARM than choose Intel.

AMD chips are simply more power efficient and the best all round gaming chips currently so it was no brainer, the power consumption and heat generation of the equivalent Intel offerings aren't exactly welcoming nor is the recent issues with the 14900 confidence building either. I did seriously think about Intel last time but the aforementioned just raised too many red flags

Theres also the sheer expense of motherboards I got through 3 cpu's on a single platform including a generation uplift, the AM4. Intel's latest offerings requires *drum roll*... yet another mobo.

I have just specced and bought a top end AMD system so 9950X. How I decided was by going through all the reviews and looking at the benchmarks for my intended use, gaming isn't this rigs primary purpose so AMD came out on top. Next time around it could be Intel.

I have always been intel. This is mostly because I know what to expect, am familiar with software, BIOS settings, and even overclocking software and techniques. The moment I wander in to AMD, everything is unknown to me, so not a place I will willingly go to.

Having said that, intel have really been declining since, imo, the 12th gen and the latest core ultra releases are a disaster. For the first time ever, I am seriously considering going AMD. I just need to do a little research.

My Intel run has been 1989-2024.
I won't hide that I had a little bit of anxiety in switching to AMD CPUs for the first time but so far my first all red system is running smooth as silk and I haven't even bothered to tweak it yet.

I hope Intel will manage to make a comeback and that the market will be balanced, otherwise consumers are at a risk of getting shafted both on the CPU and GPU side, where a dominating brand is basically pushing prices up at will.
That said, it might soon be an interesting time to buy Intel shares, if they keep sinking you can bet on either further government help or a buy-out, both of which should be pretty interesting for share price...

Can I ask you, what did you go for? I am nervously looking to do the same.

Consider that I splurged because this build is likely to last around 10 years so I went for 7950X3D, 64GB RAM and a 7900GRE for GPU (that's the easiest part to swap).
I assembled the whole setup myself (with a lot of help from fellow forum members!) and so far I'm very satisfied. No compatibility issues even on fairly old games and frankly it's incredibly more responsive than even my wife's i7 12700.

Right now I'd suggest you wait for the new gen as it's pretty close and there is more potential both on performance and overclocking.

If you do pick intel I would try pay the extra for the 14700k

But I myself would not go for an intel 14th cpu if I was buying today as it far to late into it cycle
that is a valid point

but I have never changed a cpu once I built a system I just change it every 4-6 years was more thinking the 14700k/14700kf are around the £200 mark

Intel have changed socket type again, so made 1700 obsolete?
only obsolete if you like to change a system once built overwise it has very little bearing on things

looking at am5 undecided on a limited budget but will see once the new 90 series is released how it all shapes up

OCUK currently charges £120 more for the 14700k than the 14600k; that's a lot of money for not much extra performance (except under a few circumstances where the extra cores really count).

For myself is well worth paying the extra as I normally only upgrade my cpu/motherboard/memory every 5 or 6 years
