hello

recently got 2x 36gb raptors to run in raid 0 along with a 500gb storage drive. Someone mentioned 72gb probably isnt that much space these days and thinking on it they might be right. Im putting vista on which is like 10gb, supreme commander is 10gb and just 1 game, steam with hl2 etc takes up a fair chunk like 5gb or something, office ultimate 2007 probably takes up loads. Im not a massive gamer but i do like future compatibility. Not sure if OC will let me but i was considering just returning the HDDs when i get them and swapping them for 2x 74gb raptor drives. Right now my total HDD usage for O.S/apps is about 50gb and thats windows xp and office 2003, although theres a bunch of crap ive collected over the years i dont need i suppose.

Ill stop giving my life story now the question is do people think 36gb raptor paired in raid 0 is more or less redundant now (yes the pun was intended cause im weak)

I would agree that for games/applications, 36GB is getting too small. I would send OcUK a webnote asking about returning them (i.e. unopened).

I think space that small can get hamper your 'computing experience' - bit of an odd way to label it.

But if I was that close, to the limit of the hard drive, I would be checking it every couple of weeks and wondering when (as opposed to if) it would fill up.

I had a similar experience with my 74gb Raptor, which had my OS and Games (everything else was on the 320GB) and I filled that up in no time - which I was quite annoyed about.

I'd suggest expanding your space when you can, as opposed being midway through an install some night and finding that you're at the limit. Which brings on a string of expletives.

It depends on what you plan to store on that 36GB, fine for OS and a few games. Each game can be around 4GB, some like FS X are 13GB! For my use sole 36GB HD would be impossible, have music collection stored on the PC too.

tbh I don't think you should have the right to return them, it's your fault you bought only 36GB drives.

Regardless even 140GB Raptor isn't enough for large game collection, you really need a couple of drives. A 36GB Raptor then couple of 500GB drives should be enough.

I wouldn't bother with Vista.

the whole point in getting them is to run games and the operating system fast along with 1 or 2 commonly used programs like ms office. Im not storing files like movies, music etc on there that would go on the larger 500gb HDD. I work for a company that sells electronic components and we have a policy that states anyone can return a part with a full refund within 7 days and i believe that is a legal requirement so when you say i shouldnt get it i think i should. Ill contact them tomorrow and see what the deal is. They are already getting 1.3k from me and now im gonna ask them to let me pay another £60 for higher spec HDDs so its not like im ripping them off. Overclocking a CPU and blowing it along with other components and then expecting replacement parts would be

Oh btw just noticed the comment about vista, im not buying it i am getting it for free (legally)

I know it's just your opinion but come on, it's not like he's planning to kick them around before he returns them. The fact is he won't even use them and he's legally entitled to return them if he's not happy.

Distance selling, they have to accept a return (unopened) within a certain time; 7/14 days seems about right...

How do you raid a raptor?

I just got one raptor today, im assuming you need two obviously. But how do you raid raptors, whats the process? And whats the benefits?

Apparently on reviews the 36gb raptor has good seek time, but doesnt load up windows any faster than any normal hard drives, but is good for game loading times - i have noticed this already, shaved time off my BF2 loading time.

you need to have a controller card or a motherboard that supports raid, with either it will give you an option to set up the raid after the normal bios screen. I made another thread about HDD setup actually cause im having 3rd thoughts now about going to 7200.10 again (damn my feeble brain and its indecisivness)

72gig should be just about enough for OS, common Apps and games, provided you don't have too many installed at once.

Personally I'd have gone for the 74gig drives anyway as they are faster

Oh well i definately know my motherboard is raid capable, it gives me the option to install something when i shove the motherboard drivers cd in, didnt install it though.

But what does raiding them do?

Distance selling act, doesn't matter if it is opened - it's your equivalent of asking to see the item in a shop to make sure you're happy with the purchase before you buy it .

yea i phoned ocuk the other day and they said its fine. After i have them i can phone their support and get a number to send it back so no problem at all. How quickly ill get the refund who knows, so long as i get it this month i guess
