ShieldTV is the best option here by far, I've cleaned out all the additional apps and recommendation settings and now all I have are Plex, Netflix, Amazon, Spotify and iPlayer.
My 'Recommended'/'On Deck' section is set up to just pull stuff from my Plex.

shield is £100 more than a chromacast ultra though (£165 vs £70); once you have started the cast from the Android/windows/nas device
you are not using the processor on it, could probably even buy an android tablet for less than £100
