Recomend me a new Road Cycling Jacket

well what about this ?

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/altura-pocket-rocket-jacket/

and just take that with me if the weather is unpredictable ?

my soft shell if fleece lined which I wear all the time, could use the pocket rocket if weather turns nasty ?

Having a packable like that seems to be your best option as you enjoy your soft shell that much!

For a packable I tend to look at cheaper than that though, I always consider that it's stuffed in a pocket with other things so likely to get marked, possible holes from keys, possibly dropped and even possibly lent to someone else and damaged/non-returned.

I've got the DHB Active one, £15 but it's very 'boil in the bag' so I only tend to wear it when it rains and not 'just in case'.

There are tons of options if spending upto say £60 (the Pocket Rocket £62):

So it really comes down to what branding you like to wear and what will fit you best, there are tons of other options too (and not just Wiggle) :)

ok then, lets do a couple of scenarios

What if I didn't own a soft shell ?
and what if an alternative to the soft shell I already have ?

lets see what you come up with then, I can made a definite decision :)

cheers all

i actually do have a rain jacket already

i have this Pearl Isumi Select WXB one that was going for £100 off (or what ever it was)

which is quite packable :)

I got one of those at the same time. Used it right through winter. Long sleeved base layer + long sleeve top under it for cold days. Just a base layer if it was over about 5 degrees. No problems at all.

Its not that aero, so would like to get a Gabba at some point. But that's just vanity really, its not like I'm racing or TTing in the winter.

Then you'd be like me, I don't have a soft shell as I wear a combination of jacket and different kinds of jerseys. 'Normal' jerseys under jacket when commuting/cold. Windproof/thicker jerseys with carried packable rain layer when it's warmer. Throw waterproof arm (& leg) warmers into the mix and a selection of base layers and I'm set for every eventuality! ;)

The jacket is a softshell replacement for me, if it's too warm for jacket but not warm enough for a windproof jersey I'll wear it alone with arm warmers (and a thicker base layer). I generally find my good jacket (vents) good upto 7/8 degrees.

except the fit of it is terrible and even when its not raining you ll still be soaking wet from sweating in it.

Gabba is were its it, once you ve got one you only ever wear that, or a full on winter jacket and for the other 5 days a year a short sleeve jersey :)

and the Gabba hasn't been "usurped" by the Alpha jacket, different level or warmth offered from both of them.

I got a small and it fits me fine. It is fairly warm but with the vents open its quite pleasant and I only wear it at night for my 10pm commute home.

popped in there today
such a small shop, so doesn't carry a lot of stuff

they only had the Castelli Squadra in a medium, which was way too small, no Scottile ones at all

I have to order it, but not sure what size, and he doesn't know when he's going to get some in, as they have to make up an order before they get stuff delivered

he said Italian stuff comes up a lot smaller and said I would probably need a an extra large (all my stuff is in Large)

so I need to get to someone like Evans and try one on

I think the most I've worn when out riding is a base layer, jersey and softshell. I also have bib tights which come quite a way up my torso which helps. Beyond that it's all about gloves, neck warmer, overshoes, skullcap...

I can't imagine riding in 5 layers. I bet you could get hit by a car and just bounce down the road unhurt.

This.

I have a springtime jacket that I wear a lot and a thicker winter one for when its freezing cold. If its really tipping it down I have a gilet or a packable boil in the bag waterproof.

Vonhelmet is right though, its all about the head scarf (buff), gloves and overshoes.

I must run hotter than most, a merino and short sleeve jersey does me for 95% of dry rides, on the coldest days I wear a castelli jacket but only half zipped up. My fingers however... lol
