Hi all,

I'm looking for a new device for streaming Netflix & iPlayer @ 1080P on my bedroom hdtv. I'm currently using either the Wii (which is SD only) or I hook my PC up which isn't ideal for me as it's in another room. Budget is probably no more than £100.

(we also have BT infinity so can access Netflix SuperHD.)

Options I have considered so far:

Apple TV
Roku 1080
WD TV box
Blue Ray Player with smart app

I would probably go for an Apple TV box except I have no other Apple devices so unable to get iPlayer. I do like the menu's though:P

Any new suggestions or comments on the above greatly appreciated,

Cheers!

Have you considered an xbox 360, so cheap second hand now.
As well as having a big App Store.

Also the biggest eco system after apple. So films/music etc

My only criticsm is its getting a old and it could be a little snappier. But then I changed from a. HTPC to an xbox360 and I do prefer the simplicity of it.

Second hand Playstation 3 Slim, or a new Super Slim but you'd struggle to find one of those for less than £100. You could probably pick up a used Xbox 360 for around that though, or maybe even cheaper. :)

I don't think SuperHD is available on the Xbox & it's a feature I'd certainly like to utilise so that probably rules them out.

I have looked at 2nd hand PS3's as well. SuperHD is available on them & I could get one off the bay for around my budget so it's certainly an option.

Another vote for a PS3, it's what I use, and can play bluerays and game too. All in one box.

This. Running the PS3 Media software on a PC that has the files you want to stream works wonders too. I just set it up on a computer in another room, and it streams movies flawlessly to the PS3, and gives it the ability to browse the PC's directories to easily select films.

I have a Smart BluRay player, which supports Netflix. It is alright.. but it's fiddly to search programms using the alphabet on a remote control.

It's meant to becoming to Xbox, but who knows when

It's a good machine for ~£60 all depends how much you want to spend and if you use any other feature.

You need Live for Netflix, that's another £25-30 a year, then the media remote is another £10. You could easily get the same sort of functionality from a Blu-ray player or WDTV Live.

The PS3 has some great media features and I use mine almost every day, and the Netflix app is a bit better than the Xbox one, but if you aren't going to play games on it there are better, cheaper solutions out there.

You don't need another remote. That's like saying you need another remote for ps3.

The good thing with msft is they have one of the biggest Eco systems and lots of it is meant to be coming to other platforms, where other ecosystems you are tied in. Of course this depends. If you want to use that Eco system.

Thanks for the replies guys. I game on my PC so I'm covered on that. What I really want is Netflix in the best possible quality with the best interface. I havn't got any plans to digitise my film library atm so no real need for local network integration either.

I keep coming back to the Apple TV - it's just really annoying that there is no iPlayer access with it:/

Has anyone got experience using the WDTV Live & Netflix?

Best UI I've used and used most of the netflix apps. Is the windows 8 app, which also does super hd. But it means building a HTPC, which won't be as cheap as the other options.

WDTV is one of the few I haven't used.
And one of the worst is smasung tv app. Just such a horrible UI to navigate around.

I have a WDTV Live and use it for Netflix all the time ...works great, Ive also got a PS3 that I use a VPN with to get the US Netflix, no complaints with either system.

Ohhh one thing, I can get 3D content on the PS3 Netflix but for some reason the WDTV Live would only show the same programs in 2D (both connected to the US Netflix) that's if your even bothered about 3D and paying extra for a VPN.

You don't need one no, but you're going to be tearing through AA batteries otherwise, and a controller is a lot more cumbersome to use than a remote when it's just being used for media.

No idea what relevance the rest has.

Those Android TV sticks might be worth a look, never used one though so I don't know what the support is like for Netflix etc, I suspect the Super HD quality isn't available on them though.

why would you tare through batteries, that makes no sense.

as for android sticks, they can be used, I use them in hotels. But its not a nice experience, They're pretty clumsy UI. As he wouldn't use anything else though, He's better of with a dedicated box like the WDTV which does super HD and is meant to be decent, but haven't used one myself.

They last for ages in a controller, controllers are designed for constant use, so a few button clicks every hour or so is nothing.

I just wish Netflix would charge more and get more content, but all the sky exclusive deal kind of stops that.
