Need a pair of desktop speakers as my trusty old Cambridge THX Soundworks have died. Need to stick with desktop style speakers due to space issues and no amp rather than going for 'proper' bookshelf or decent monitor speakers.

Does anyone have M-Audio DX-4 or Audiophile AV-40? I don't really like the look of the Creative Gigaworks. Any others worth looking at in this price range? <£100

Yeah they look pretty nice. Flatmates were complaining about the noise from the sub I've got at the moment, that's why I was hoping to find a decent pair of speakers minus the sub.

I think I'll just spend a bit more and get an amp and a couple of cool monitor speakers and some brackets so I can fix them onto the walls or something.

Hi,

Sorry to kind of hijack the thread, but this is the first time I've heard of monitor speakers! Having just looked up the recommended Edirol MA-15D, it seems to suit my needs perfectly.

Basically, what I need is for a pair of speakers to connect to my laptop and my desktop, plus speaker output would be preferable. The Edirol MA-15D seems to fit the bill perfectly!

I was going to go the amp and bookshelf speaker route, but that was only because I thought an amp was needed for such a setup. Would a pair of speakers like the Edirol MA-15D be suited to such a setup? Basically they'd be used for music and films. It now seems silly to have a huge amp cluttering the place up if it's unneeded.

Before, I was thinking about a second hand Cambridge A5 and some second hand Diamond 9.1 speakers. Would the two setups be much different?

Get Audioengine A2's.

Kevlar mid/sub woofer, Silk Tweeters, Powered Speakers.
Just got a pair in white, very Happy just make sure you have a good soundcard and MP3's at a good bitrate!

Morgan.

i'm currently using creative gigaworks 2.0 speakers. they have mini subs in each speaker for a little bit of base and sit nicely on my desk. comes with plenty of cable as well for slack

Thanks for the suggestions folks, I think I'm going to go for the Audioengine A2's, they look very nice, have the right connections I need and are also damn small. The Edirol's are pretty stylish looking but I don't really need the extra controls on the front of the speakers and I can't find them in black.

Stilll tempted by the M-Audio AV40's though as I've got an M-audio soundcard but I can't find size specs for them or what connections they have available on them, even on the official M-Audio site.

Think I'll have a wander around Brighton and see if I can find any of them in a shop to take a closer look and listen before ordering.

edit: Better wait a few weeks anyway, just remembered I've already treated myself to a new e8400 cpu this weekend :)

I'm in the same boat... was thinking about the Creative T20/T40's and the M-Audio AV40's (they also have the AV20 and 30's if you have limited space), but my friend in audio was like, don't do that! :D

I used to have a second hand Cambridge A5 and some Eltax III monitor speakers, but I moved to Hong Kong and couldn't bring them with me. I'm using some 30W no-brand things, but they seem to do the job at mid-volume. What i'd like is some clarity at high volume, but i've been told i'd need an amplifier and a decent set of monitor speakers to get that again.

While we're here, has anyone tried the Behringer MS20 or MS40? These look like 'real' speakers, are a decent size and have optical inputs which is what I want.

Yeah I was looking at those, also just stumbled across the "KAM sound packages" which are in the same price range and they come with a small amp and two speakers.

I spoke to a couple of shops this morning and both told me to buy the Edirol MA-15D instead of the MS-40 as it was likely to be more reliable. So I did and I'm listening to it now.....

Let us know what you think of the Audioengines if you're still getting some. I'm after some 2.0 speakers for music, gaming and a bit of recording but I dont know which to go for. I have a creative 2.1 setup now which sounds fine to me but 2.1 is a hassle to move around for me.

I have the audioengines.

Once i turned off the crystaliser on my bro's xfi and altered the EQ they sounded very nice, very clean and clear.
The sound is so much better than my brothers logitech 2.1 £40 system.
They are best at vocals and acoustic music, simply because of the lack of deep bass. They have bass, and enough of it, but it dosent create that deep 'wholeness'. Thats why i hooked up my bro's old Phillips subwoofer that came with another cheap sound system. I set it up so it didnt mess up the mids of the A2's. Now i can play any type of music and it sounds great! Very bery happy.

Even if i didnt have that sub to hook up, i would be very happy with the A2's as they are.

Just remember: like any speaker they need to be warn in and make sure your mp3's are at high bitrates and that you have a good soundcard.
