Recommend a CPU Cooler!

R1 Ultimate is very good. One of the best of the best. NH-D15, PH-TC14PE, Silver Arrow IB-E, FI-REEX Deluxe, .. a few more but I can't remember which ones right now.

As for AIO that are bette than air, Swiftech H220-X and H240-X and I expect the new EK Predator will be. But they are not CLC. Components can be changed and/or added.

the darkrock 3 is a real pain in the arse to fit. stupid plastic clips that dont keep it stable then 2 lots of nuts and a spanner that is the wrong shape to be usefull.

I use an h100i as a top exhaust in an air 540. The stock fans are awful. I use corsair sp120 quiet editions and the cooler barely makes any noise now with the fans at full speed. Also swapped out the case fans to af140 led quiet editions which are nice. Air coolers just look so damn ugly, i love the look of the led corsair logo matching my builds colour scheme.

I cant recommend the phanteks enough! I have it and the highest temp I have ever seen was 45 :)

Phanteks PH-TC14PE

Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140 rev.A is a great cooler for the money. It cools as good as NH-D14 and is actually slightly quieter too. Also HR-o2 Macho

If only it wasn't brown! Would never put it in any of my cases just because of that lol

Fair comment if you have a windowed case.

But not an issue for me. Once I shut that side panel I can't tell what colour it is :)

I7-6700k currently running at stock. Ambient room temp 16c (bare in mind this is "sunny" Scotland) and idle temps are 19/20c and fans on pmw curve are running at min (approx 300 rpm). After 30 mins prime95 (version 26.6) Max temps averaging high 50's (highest temp hit was 60c) and fans running at 80% by then. Pretty damn impressive me thinks. And my chip doesn't have the lowest vid I've seen either at stock. Though the cooler claims to be 165mm, it seemed to measure at more like 175mm high to me! So it only just fits in my case and allows the side panel to close. So make sure it will fit folks.

Too bad it looks like someone has wiped their ass on it! wouldn't be seen dead with that in my case lol

What air cooler would you recommend for a 5820K in a Corsair 540?
I'm seriously considering replacing my H100i and going to pure air. Anyone have any recommendations on a good cooler for OCing?

I'd keep that H100i as it is technically one of the top performer CPU cooler out there to date, http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cases_cooling/corsair_h100i_gtx_review/7

if you are having issues with fan noise, I'd simply replace the fans like what the others suggested here. You won't regret it :)

Testing in a case is not accurate way to determine cooler performance, especially when most are using room ambient as baseline air temperature rather than the actual temperature of air going into cooler or radiator.

The tests are a specific system's performance with different coolers .. which may or may not reflect how it will perform in our systems.

Measure air temperature going into cooler and radiater, not the room.

Using room ambient instead of actual cooler intake air temp is akin to looking at thermometer in the kitchen to see how warm it is in the lounge. While there is some correlation there may be quite a difference. ;)
It is more logical to look at thermometer in the lounge.:D

Thanks again for all your help with PSU RMAs. Replacements are nice and quiet. :D

Thanks for all the replies, kind of forgot about this thread haha :)
I will keep the H100i and change the fans out. Amazing how now it's cooler my PC is silent :) Also the mount for X79 will work with X99 correct?
Think my main issue is my 780 SLI kicking out serious heat. Using a infrared temperature gun I measured the heat coming out of my case via the H100 rad, was about 40C (on a hot day that hurts!)

I've had all the heatsinks mentioned, the Phanteks, Noctua and H100i. You should change the fans to the Corsair SP120 Quiet or get the Performance ones and limit them to ~1500rpm in the Corsair Link software to keep the noise tolerable. You are loosing a little bit of performance.

Though what is definitely hampering you is the heat generated by your GPU pumped into your case.

The only thing that beats the D15 for noise/performance is what I have now; Swiftech H220-X. Shame you can't get it in the UK, mine came from Denmark.
