Recommend a dogfighting game

Variable resistance is the winner for me, Thank you Tefal. Im bored of my sidewinder, need to find where they have these around.

Just in case you've gotten the wrong idea I don't mean you can personalty change the resistance i mean it seems to change depending on how quickly you move it, ie if you slowly move it it seems very gentle and smooth, but when you slam it on it seems to be a bit more firm.

Although it always feels as though it's also being powered forward by some sort of machinery/attached to something more than just a joystick.

It feels very strange but absolutely right if you understand me :p

roger that, I know what you mean. Thats what I assumed it would be like, more realistic that way. Cant wait to test it out. Just found one cheap in stock.

Battleground Europe if youre really into dogfighting, but be warned - lots of simmers have been playing for a long time and the standard is very high. Although if you just like furballs, there are lots of those as well. Basically the early stages of every campaign put everyone into pretty rubbish early war planes so you get plenty of time to skill up.

You should have a rough idea of basic flight (Energy vs Stall) and if you have the cash (and the desire) get a decent setup - my system comprises of an X52 (seperate throttle very handy), CH Pro Rudder pedals and the all powerful Trackir. The immersion is absolute, I used to love flying CAP over the UK trying to intercept incoming bombers, but the most memorable moment I had was flying CAS over a town under attack by infantry and Armor when a flight of B25's came in on a carpet run. For a flight simmer, thats Nirvana.

How do you all play these flying games with keyboard or special joystick?

Like this :)

Tom Clanys H.A.W.X is a modern fighter game. Pretty much arcady, single player is quite good (can also be done co-op). Not just dogfighting, lots of ground to air etc.

It is a bit easy but does fit your requirements quite well.

I got a copy of IL2 a few weeks ago, available for download for about £8. Haven't had time to really play it much as i have got loads of games on the cheap that i need to play.

/edit IL2 is only £5 on steam... get it quick!

Thanks OP. Unbelievably I didn't know about wings of prey until this thread. I can't wait for it. It looks fantastic.

On your original topic, IL2 or even Lock ON on the arcade modes can be fun. HAWX I found boring, and not because in a Sim snob, it was just boring.

IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 is €5 on steam and Pacific Fighters (included in IL2:1946) is €2.50
so you have no excuse :)

Nate

IL-2 1946 has a single player campaign, also can download loads of single player missions, all WW2 stuff including Jets from the 45-46 era.

And it's half price in the steam sale! That's one to check out.
Edit: although, judging by the reviews, it seems more of a sim than an arcade style game. Hmmm.

Bit of a different path, but check out Freespace 2. I've never been a fan of WWII fighters or other real world flying sims, but FS2 is undoubtedly among the best of its class. Plus, cheap and pretty with the opensource pack.
