Recommend a PC Game

If you've not gamed since the Wolfenstein days, then you are in an absolutely brilliant position to do something that that many people do not have the ability to do.

You have the pick of the last ~15 years of PC games to play, and enjoy, for the first time.

There are so many amazingly brilliant games that have been released in this period. Don't rush to play the newest, most graphically impressive games, because you will then never be able to go back to the older games that you have missed out on, as "they will look crap"

This is a great opportunity for the people of OcUK to recommend some of their all-time favourite games from the last 15 years, and to bring joy to someone who has missed out on the experiences that they encountered the first time they played it.

I'd put all the suggestions of games from the last couple of years on the back-burner for the moment, and concentrate on some of the old classics :)

The previous post got me thinking alright. Yeh, I suppose the gaming world is my 'oyster' so to speak. Didn't realise I'd get so much feeback from everyone - didn't really set out to start a mega post . . .

Happy gaming over Christmas

Do this you will never look back!!!

I played the original Half Life when it came out, it was pretty good.
I had a dabble with HL2. It was ok but nothing new other than updated gfx.

I take it HL2 ep1 & 2 are just more HL2?

Orange Box is so overrated. It is just one very long game of Half Life - which was an ok game 10 years ago.

CS: Source ? Same again ... yawn. I played CS when it was beta 0.6 or something. Guess what, its the same game with yes, you guessed it. Updated gfx.

I never understood all this love for Valve and orange box and i just needed to get that off my chest.

ok all done, sorry 'bout that ;)

For me the game of the last 10 years, fun-wise, has got to be TF2. Yeah it might look gimmicky but it is incredibly playable and thoroughly entertaining.

The Pyro's random muffles still make me laugh even after a year! :D

Someone mentioned earlier that you're in a lucky position to have 15 years of games to catch up on - I agree, you're certainly in for some gaming heaven.

What about Farcry? That'll be cracking for you to play if you haven't played it before. How are you planning on going about your 'catching up'? You could start at the beginning or you could just go straight for one of the classics like F.E.A.R. or HL2.

From the past year all of the following are superb on the PC and run well even on a lower spec machine:

Bioshock
Call Of Duty 4
Assassins Creed
Dead Space
Fallout 3
Devil May Cry 4
Lost Planet Extreme Colonies Edition
The Orange Box
Left 4 Dead
LEGO Indiana Jones
LEGO Batman
Sega Rally

Then if you have an uber PC:

GTA-IV
Crysis
Crysis Warhead

Ah good, I thought it was just me. It's very well done but it's still a fairly ordinary game with a lot of polish and attention to detail invested in it.

don't worry you guys are far from the only ones, wouldn't touch the orange box with a barge pole, and portal was a load of rubbish, can't believe how much hype there was for that and how many people recommend it! had a choice a while back, doom 3 or HL2, simple decision really, doom!

I did enjoy Portal... Though I'd say that I enjoyed it despite the hysteria, it's a good little puzzler with an interesting mechanic and some really stylish touches, not the second coming :D
