Recommend an ereader?

I was oscillating between the basic Kindle and the new Paperwhite, but in the end went for the latter because the size and weight difference is fairly small, but the battery life doubles, and I like the idea of having more screen options (colour temperature, etc.). Given how long I'll keep it (probably 10 years!), the price difference didn't seem too huge to me.

Bear in mind that you may want to add a case, which will increase the size and weight slightly.

You need to give those girly wrists a proper workout ;)
I often do. But no change! :D

Its because I'm be carrying a lot on my back. And because it's a solid square and will be mixed in with other stuff in my pack the bigger it is the more likely it is to be bent.

I do like the idea of the night light mode (I guess red) but not sure it's worth 40 pounds for just some tint!

Basic = 80
Paper white = 120
Kobo = 120

The lack of physical buttons really grated on me when I moved from a years old kindle to the paperwhite

It’s frustratingly difficult to change pages via touch screen if using one handed :p
Really, I find it incredibly simple, the way I hold my kindle leaves my thumb hovering just over the screen, slight dip of it and the page changes.

The screen is completely different technology right? It's supposed to look like paper?

A phone screen is quite bright, not great on battery life etc. Otherwise everyone would just use their phone?
The two best things about a kindle over a tablet or phone for reading are

1. No glare or blue light
2. Immense battery life. My Kindle can easily last me a full week or two of reading for several hours every day without me having to even think about the battery.

My man :p

Depends on how often you will use the device and how long you will keep it for.... Is a 50% increase (£40) worth it for say 5 years of daily use?

Well, this is exactly it.
I'll mainly read it camping. Where I don't want the bulk of a book. It getting ripped and torn and wet. Awkward to read in dark as need another light source.

But I don't read much.

Usually if theres light in not in the mood for reading.

Can recommend the Kobo Libra 2. It has a night light function for easing eye strain and in general just works seamlessly.

I previously had an ancient Sony PRS-T1, which had a lot of issues (slowness, freezing, crashing, and spotty connectivity even over a USB cable), and of course it didn't have a backlight or re-orientation on tilting.

Night light mode should be sliding in to the yellow, not red.

I'm addicted to night light - I have it on 24/7 on any PC screen I'm using and am perfectly happy with it in any borderless full-screen game not using HDR.

Kobo works flawlessly with Calibre, so not locked into an ecosystem that needs jailbreaking like with Kindles.

Unfortunately just discovered the Kobo Libra 2 was discontinued earlier this year. Am surprised about that, as I bought it as one of the best of it's type in 2023.

Surely it's just as long as it doesn't have blue? My Kobo fades through orange towards red as the half hours progress into the evening.

At 100% night mode lighting (which mine is set to 24/7) it's like a very faded yellow - no sign of red as far as I can tell, just the absence of blue. Like this:

That looks like my kobo at maybe 50%. It keeps going from there to more of an orange.

Two points here I guess. 1) Do you understand how yellow is made? 2) You realise orange and red will have as much blue in it as yellow?
