Hi all im after a 2TD maybe 4 depending on cost, to store my older back cat of steam games onto. I normally buy Crucial Mx500's if im after a drive that isnt a NVME.But it seems this is now EOL, so I looked at the Samsung SSD 870 EVO but reddit is full of horror stories on these. I know it was on the older 2021-2022 manufactured drives that orignally had the issue, but some people still mention they fail a lot, this just bad luck or they still a drive to avoid.

I hadnt realised how few 2.5 inch drives are avaliable to buy these days. But I'm on a MSI b450 thomahawk max, so can only really use one NVME and I dont want to do a full platform upgrade just to use a Extra NVME for older games.

Anyone recommend anything decent, that will do the job?

I have a sales thread with some very lightly used 4TB WD SA500s in it.

The Samsung 870 Evo certainly used to be a problem but it's believed to have been sorted some time ago. It's worth checking the dates on those Reddit reports to see how current they are.

Yeah, is annoying, SATA SSDs are disappearing.

It was deffo the earlier ones that had the issues, there have not been the same negative reports since (at least, that I've seen) and my understanding is that the newer versions have different hardware.

It might still be the best of a bad bunch, even though it has a dodgy history.

I have a fair few Kingston KC600, which are believed to the same (or similar) hardware to the MX500. Their pricing is unpredictable though, especially at high capacity.

WD's Red SA500 I believe is still fine (worth checking before buying one), but the newer Blue (SA510) was downgraded and I wouldn't buy one anymore.
