Bad Company 2 - I wouldn't say it's got a 'good community' but there are still plenty of people playing it, and it's still a great game which looks fantastic IMO.
Quake Live for a bit of proper old school challenging fun.
Both of these games have been out for a long time, so of course you'll have a long way to go to catch up with the good players (potentially impossible with QL due to how long the game has been around in one form or another, and the very high skill ceiling), but at the same time neither has a huge unlock system (there's none at all for QL) which would make it unfair towards new players.
