Recommend me an RPG

So, after playing Dragon Age and actually getting fairly involved despite having my rear end handed to me, i've decided it's time for me to step into the realm of RPG gaming. In the past the only RPG i've gotten into was Final Fantasy X; I loved the characters, the world, the combat system/level up system and the whole take on social, political and religious issues.

So with that in mind i'd like some recommendations for an RPG to play. Please don't recommend FF7/8/9, I tried and disliked all of them, and the same goes for the more action-y games like Fallout 3. I'd be looking to have at least half decent graphics, an intuitive combat system, interesting characters/story and preferably a static party (Dragon Age is bugging me what with introducing new characters to my party all the time). Something that would help a beginner to the World (I just can't do Dragon Age it's too hard for me)

Oh, and if it's in the Steam sale, even better.

I've been looking at Torchlight, it seems to be fitting for a new RPG gamer. What do you think? That's also £7 on Steam but seeing as afaik it's a fairly recent release i'm gonna see if it pops up on the super deal page over the next few days.

I wouldn't call Torchlight an RPG, it's more a Hack'n'Slash. If you want that, Diablo 2 would be something for you. Just as Fallout 3 isn't either, it's more a free roaming first-person sandbox game that happens to have a science fiction or apocalyptic setting. As a fantasy alternative you could play Morrowwind or Oblivion. Both very strong games, especially Morrowind.

But neither fits the requirements of strong party characters.

The Witcher, Assassin's Creed, or Gothic 2 would be OK, but the your requirement of a stable party isn't met.

That would probably leave the Baldur's Gate series or Neverwinter Nights, although your specification of decent graphics probably wouldn't be fullfilled.

Taking all this into consideration, I would think that Baldur's Gate 2 would probably be nearest the mark.

As for Steam; I couldn't say, I hate the ruddy thing.

You'd call Assassin's Creed an RPG :S

No good medieval based RPG's out there atm imo, Just gotta hold out till D3 :P

But for me Oblivion is still my favorite.

How about "The Last Remnant"?

There's a demo on Steam so you can give it a try before you buy.

My votes for RPG type games:

The Witcher Enhanced Edition
Risen
Baldur's Gate 2
Mass Effect for a different attempt at the genre
King's Bounty The Legend/Armoured Princess for a more Heroes of Might & Magic type game

depends what you want OP:

If you want an FPS with lite rpg elements

Borderlands

If you want casual first person style rpg then:

Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

If you want first/3rd person but more rpg then:

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines + Deus Ex + Risen + Gothic series

If you want a party based rpg then:

Drakensang + NWN 2 (+addons and mods)

If you want mindless hack n slash with "rpgey" things like stats and lots of weapons then:

Diablo series + Torchlight

If you want sexiness then:

The Witcher

just depends on how hardcore you want to take it :)

If you like Dragon Age but want a more static party, then the logical choice to me is Baldurs Gate 2. It remains one of the greatest games of all time. It has a huge amount of story, lots of conversation and character interaction, lengthy play time, high customisation and is just generally awesome.

Downside, it's aging and pixellated, but dont let it put you off. I play through it again and again every year and it's just as good every time. You get to choose from a myriad of race and class combinations (not just the 3 you get in DAO)

Install the widescreen mod so it doesn't stretch the gameplay area, and you're good to go. I think you'll enjoy it.

If you get on with it, you could then move on to Neverwinter Nights (the step between BG2 and DAO) and Neverwinter Nights 2 (i didn't like this at all, never finished it. The first one was awesome though).

So that's about 160 hours of gaming for you ;) See you in a few months! :D

Nobody's mentioned the original Fallouts yet. I prefer Fallout 2, but 1 is also excellent.
Couldn't get into Baldurs Gate (I know that will be sacrilege to some)
Planescape Torment
Neverwinter Nights (agree with the above about 1 being much better than 2)

Vampire Bloodlines is incredible for the first 70% and then just 'meh' for the rest (until going after the Society of Leopold). Just uninstalled it to play Dragon Age

I was like that with Planescape Torment. I'd just finished playing Baldur's Gate II when I picked up a copy of PT. I think I was a bit jaded after playing BGII exclusively for a 100 hours+, and just didn't get into it.

I think I missed out on something...I know you have. ;)

thought first nwn story was a bit meh tbh.

Bloodlines does unfortunately descend into mindless hack n slash for the last 20% or so. But the ending is fairly decent :D - also it holds one of the most memorable characters in videogaming - Smiling Jack (guy who does Bender in Futurama)

Op could go back to Baldurs gate but if we are going that far back then heck why not Wasteland? and Ultima VII (plus 5 and 6)

Vampire Bloodlines might be a good option because it's quite easy to get into, the basic game mechanics are fairly simple, and there's no party.

KOTOR would be worth looking at as it is made by the same people as Dragon Age, it does introduce new characters to your party but mostly in the first half of the game. Also you only use 3 players at any given time so if you like you can just 'ignore' some of them (although you'll be missing out if you do!).

Some aweful and some good suggestions here.

Go give KOTOR ago, it's available cheap now. Has widescreen support (with 5 mins effort) and still looks decent. Also made by bioware too, so will have that similar sort of magic.

Also Witcher. Not played it much myself as it felt a bit pap. But it's meant to be awesome once you get into it, and is very much a brutal fantasy setting.

Ignore anything else really, torchlight is a bit like a really good xbox live arcade game. Fun but nothing to it. Fallout 3 ... just no. Go onto other titles when you've tried them tbh.

Thanks for the responses guys. I think i'm gonna take a look at the Witcher atm. Can anyone tell me whether the dialogue is voiced or just text? I find this the most important thing for me, over graphics and everything else.

Edit.

Oh, I tell a lie. There is one RPG that I got really sucked into; Golden Sun on GBA. That is one of the best games I ever played.
