Recommend me an RPG

Thanks for the responses guys. I think i'm gonna take a look at the Witcher atm. Can anyone tell me whether the dialogue is voiced or just text? I find this the most important thing for me, over graphics and everything else.

Voice acted. :)

Some aweful and some good suggestions here.

What is it they say about opinions again?

Ignore anything else really, torchlight is a bit like a really good xbox live arcade game. Fun but nothing to it. Fallout 3 ... just no. Go onto other titles when you've tried them tbh.

On the other hand, Fallout 3 was the best game I played last year.

How about "The Last Remnant"?

There's a demo on Steam so you can give it a try before you buy.

Totally missed your post; I actually have this game, and tbh I really liked it. I just got a bit bugged out that it takes ageeeeeees before you get enough unions to have epic battles like right at the start.

KOTOR would be worth looking at as it is made by the same people as Dragon Age, it does introduce new characters to your party but mostly in the first half of the game. Also you only use 3 players at any given time so if you like you can just 'ignore' some of them (although you'll be missing out if you do!).

Completely forgot about that. Definitely worth a shot

This game any good? I've been thinking about it a few times before.

I found the start to be really slow, and gave up rather quickly. I picked up a year later, pressed on and became absolutely hooked. It's very "action" orientated, certainly not a deep rpg, but once you get rolling it's hard to put down. The combat system put some off, you have two swords, and three fighting styles for each, and to chain together attacks and get finishers you need to time them according to the style, something that will become second nature when you get into it, I think. The spells are few, but I think it's better for it, you don't create a character, you are a badass monster hunter that kills the baddies, that happens to have a few powers to throw into the sword fighting. I liked the alchemy/bomb making system, and played it on a difficulty that would have been a nightmare without them, but it never felt like a bind.

It's very unrestrained and brutal when it comes to dialogue and plot, and the player character is delightfully hardcore. You can play poker dice and brawl in the pubs, the dice game I found quite fun, while the brawling was a bit easy when you got the hang of it, was always at least funny.

If you are up for drinking beer, sexing the ladies, absolutely foul language, brutal fights, you can't go wrong. RPG-lite isn't as dirty as it sounds, it's immensely good fun, I was sad when I got nearer the end, and struggled to fill the gap it left in my gaming. To say I'm looking forward to the sequel is a gross understatement.

The Witcher is the best RPG since Vampire Bloodlines and one of the few games I would award 10/10. Other 10/10s from me would be :

Fallout 1 and 2
Deus Ex
Gothic 2 Night of the Raven
Vampire Bloodlines

Fallout 3 is amazing for its atmosphere too, but as an RPG it is a bit worse than originals.

I've managed to miss the Gothic games completely, you really rate Gothic 2 up there with Bloodlines, Deus Ex, and The Witcher? Was the first good, should I play that before 2?

I would love to see Deus Ex really get a good graphical overhaul, while I can play it every year or two since it's release and love it every time, I think someone getting given it now will just think "arrgh poo dated graphix!" and wont give it a chance.

The witcher is an amazing game. But almoist everyone says the same thing, including me, that everyone seems to put it down in the first chapter because it just gets slow. Plus the first boss battle is the hardest in the game and that is sooo frustrating. Then we all randomly picked it up again and discovered it has an emense story line that you litraly will play through the night because you can't put it down. The voice acting fits the story nicely and it really makes it run so smoothly. You expect it's going to end soon because you've put so much time into it but it keeps giving. Great game :)

GET IT. Gothic 3 is an abomination and i will never buy a game ever again from them because they sold a completely broken game then ditched it instead of patching it. Disgusting tbh.

Is Risen not from the same guys?

I really enjoyed it.

Have you seen the community patches and mods for it? It's shocking from a developer point of view but the community did bring it up to what it should have been I think.
