Having looked into BGG and watched a few run throughs I think that the best Co-ops are:
Some of these play better than others with newer people, but all offer a different style of co-op play.
My personal choice for newbies would be based on getting different types of people to play:
- Hanabi as an opener
- Sherlock Holmes as another game that appeals to a larger audience and has good all around involvement, but low replay-ability
- Red November is good fun, but quite long.
- Robinson Crusoe as a Pandemic alternative
I think after playing Pandemic people tend to lean towards the Zombie games when looking for similar types of games, but I tend to find people love Pandemic because its real and isn't exactly scary.. so you feel heroic.
Pandemic just isn't really like a zombie games or a horror game, so Dead of Winter and Carnival Zombie for people who love zombies, whilst Eldrich Horror and Ghost Stories for people who like ghosts and horror.
If you want a follow up to Pandemic then you just want the Pandemic expansions, but if you want a totally different game co-op game then Robinson Crusoe as a great all around co-op that appeals to the same audience.
Be careful getting a new game to play this year instead of Pandemic because you miss the point of board games in my opinion.... they arent computer games that you get a new one every year. You play the same game over and over.... so as I advised earlier, its often best to get a different type of game entirely.
To add to this, what I mean is that don't necessarily go looking for an alternative to Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Chess or Scrabble because people have them already.... you might choose a similar style of game to persuade someone to play board games again as it will ease them into the hobbie, but you are better showing them the other classics such as Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Pandemic or even 7 Wonders....to show them the depth and range of board games because each will allow you to gauge what appeals to your audience / friends.
I have some friends who just wont click with board games, so the most I can get out of them is Cards against humanity, whilst others like Pandemic, others love 7 Wonders and others love deductive games like The Resistance. It is horses for courses, so it pays to have variety to essentially get people to the table.
