Recommend me some Sci-Fi TV shows

The 4400
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Stargate Universe (ideally after SG1 and SG atlantis for any of it to make sense)

I really got into these series but it was just so frustrating the way in which they were cancelled; virtually half way through a sentence!

Star Trek: Deep Space 9 (the others are good -especially TNG- but this one is the best imho)

I consider myself a HUGE Star Trek fan yet I have never seen a single episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine... until tonight. I am just watching "Emissary" and was going to ask what people's opinions were on TNG vs DS9. I've just finished "Chain of Command" in TNG and it is the right time to join DS9 from the beginning and watch in order.

Not sure I like Benjamin Sisko at the moment. The guy playing him is a weird actor. LOL. :D

Farscape is great!

Battlestar is perfect, really watch this.

X-Files is marvellous! The stand alones are great and the main story arc ties things together perfectly.

DS9 star trek is IMO the best but you would be best to start with TNG.

Andromeda is quite good, just ignore the 5th season or it will ruin it.
Babylon 5 is probably the best Sci-Fi series ever, Battlestar Galactica (Newer one not the original 70's one) is a close second.
IMO DS9 is the best of the Trek series especially once Sisko goes bald.

I think some of it is that DS9 can be a bit darker and doesn't show humans as being constanly the morally superiour race, some questionable decisions are made in some episodes by Sisko and others. Also there is underlying story arc which is different for Star Trek where its usually one story per episode and everything is reset for the next episode.

babylon 5

watch from the start but then forget series 1 (except the important plot lines)
then watch season 5 but forget you watched it and just think it ended at 4 :O

Actually the final 5 episodes of S5 are fantastic, just ignore all the telepath nonsense ;)

Anyway, B5 is one of the best sci-fi shows of all time, blitz through season 1, pick up all the important plot lines and then enjoy the epic-ness of seasons 2-4.

I forgot to mention, DS9 "borrows" heavily from B5, you can see massive parallels to the B5 storyline in later seasons of DS9. If you want something serious, emotional & believable, go with B5, if you want political correctness, tech overload and transporters, go with DS9.

As said above, heavily influenced by B5, earlier seasons of DS9 are far more traditional trek with a story per episode and a happy ending, it was when B5 started becoming hugely successful with the arc formula that DS9 jumped onboard with the same style.

FWIW...as far as I know, B5 was the first major show to use arc style storytelling either in sci-fi or mainstream tv shows.

Pretty much this.

It has an edge and a continuity to it which star trek generally lacks. Whilst I enjoy other Trek I found this star trek "for adults" (in as much as star trek can be)

Though I would take Battlestar and many other series before even thinking about star trek, it's down the list of truly good sic fi.
