Recommend me some trance?

Just finished recording a new mix, it's a little bit different to the usual. There are 30 tracks squeezed into just over 20mins and it's taken me 15 hours to do it!! I'd love to hear feedback and constructive criticism from anyone that gives it a listen :)

Mods - we established earlier in the thread that posting samples of tracks is ok provided they were under about 90 seconds. Based on that i'm assuming it should be ok to post this mix this since you barely hear more than a few seconds of any one track

did we ?

Don't really go to clubs since Cream closed, so not really into this type of music anymore, but i gave it a listen and altho i dont think the music is as good as it used to be, i quiet enjoyed it, will give it another listen when i've drank a few;).

p.s. There should always be room for Flaming June on every album, probly one of the best tracks ever. imo

I don't think you can really judge the state of trance (which i think is fantastic at the moment :)) on that mix. It was more a bit of fun and a test of my Ableton ability than anything meaningful.

I'd love to link some mixes by Krooton, CDj-Rossi and myself to try and get you back into the swing of trance but the mods will most likely throw a hissy fit!

And yeah for a track over 10years old Flaming June still sounds fantastic but then pretty much everything by BT is extraordinarily good. You might have recognised a couple of his tracks in that short mix ;)

Yes, yes you did.

I've taken the pleasure of copying the conversation from nearer the beginning of the thread

just before we delete all this, is there a reason that this doesn't infringe copyright ?

Samples only, no full tracks, perfectly fine

If that is the case then great, can someone point me to a link where it shows samples are ok ( I'm not up on this sort of stuff )

Provided it is only part of a track, and at a lower bitrate than the standard selling bitrate (160kbps or above), it's fine.

Online store use loads of them, from 1:30 samples on
http://www.juno.co.uk/trance/this-week/
to 3:50 samples on
http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/servlet/Catalog?Category=TR&All=True&ND=-1&Sort=NI
To full length imbedded samples on

:)

Can i have my link back now?

After this was discussed we reviewed it the Don's room and it was decided it was a grey area ( we have not seen anything that defines the law ) so it would not be allowed, sorry

If you can provide a link which covers definitive law on this then let us know and we can have a look :)

There is no definitive law for or against, which is annoying.

Freely distributed mixes are the greyest of grey areas.

Provided that no money is being made off them, pretty much all dance music labels see dj mixes are a form of free advertising, and as such do not do anything against them, unless included tracks are pre-released.

Whereas normal radio pays royalties to artists/labels when tracks are played, the dance industry sort of runs in reverse, with labels looking to get track exposure to boost interest and sales.

Radio shows like A State of Trance and Trance Around The World don't pay any royalties to artists, because they are essentially doing them a favour. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if labels actually paid the big name djs to play their tracks in the first place.

But it is totally understandable from OCUK's point of view, you have no reason to risk a grey area.

It's just a shame that we can't do here what has been done on numerous other forums to cover such eventualities, which is to allow links to pages where a mix can be downloaded, but not a direct link to the mix. This way, where the file is actually hosted is held accountable for any legal action should it happen. There are loads of mix hosting websites out there, so linking to them puts any legal onus on them should something come about from the mixes they host.

I can dream though :p

what you say is how we see it, you post mixes you have done but no information as to where they can be downloaded from, this is acceptable if folks then find them then thats up to them
