I currently have a beQuiet 850w Pure Power 12, just upgraded to AM5 9800X3D in prep for getting a 50 series card in Jan / Feb.

I appreciate that I am going to be be on the lower end with my current PSU and am looking for recommendations on a good 1000W (I assume) PSU to swap in. I was looking at the beQuiet Dark Power 13 ones but have really heard some mixed reviews about them being noisy or worse faulty. I know seasonic is often recommened but not sure where to buy and at what price point (is plat / titanum worth is over gold etc). I am looking for as low noise (both in fan and whine) as I can get but also keen to pay for something that is good quality even if I need to pay more for that.

Thanks for any advice.

Oh really, the plan is to go for 5080 (I think the 5090 will be just too expensive). That is some nice news I was expecting to have to go to 1000 or more for some headroom.
Power draw up to 450w for the 5080 , 600w for the 5090 so you should be fine with 850w for the 5080 . The GPU will come with a 16pin to 3xi pin adapter so older PSU work.

If you definitely want a bigger PSU you can get the NZXT C Series 1200W Full Modular PCIe 5.0 80+ Gold Power Quiet Supply/PSU ATX3.0 for £120 .

Gold rated is fine anything above that is margins of efficiency.

Thank you Micky, that is really helpful, thank you for taking the time to respond.

I did some reading and the c1200 gets really good reviews on various review sites, but several users complain of coil whine? Anyone used one and experienced the same?

What would a decently priced alternative be?

For a new PSU specifically for the 5080/5090, it makes complete sense to get an ATX 3.1 PSU. This will have the updated 12V-2x6 HPWR cable that should mean you'll have no issues and have full compatibility.

I'm planning to get a 5090, so have the 1600W Noctua Seasonic ATX 3.1 PSU on it's way. I like my PSU's to not have to run close to 100% as this reduces noise, temperatures and coil whine (in my experience at least!).

The margins to reach Platinum and Titanium are thin, so much so that it's unlikely you'd even notice a difference in your electric bill going from a gold to even a Titanium rated PSU. IMO a Gold rated one is 99% of the time perfectly sufficient.

I'm looking at something similar, 9950X3D next year with a 5090; I can see the RM1000x is on offer that's ATX3.1; is 1000W cutting it fine?

The RM1000x does not have a 12v-2x6 header. A 1000W PSU should be sufficient for the 5090 (600W). However, perhaps consider going up to 1200W to provide some extra overhead for the future. I also want to upgrade my PSU, however I am going to wait until the next generation of GPUs come out to see what connectors are required.

This is a hotly debated topic. IMO, 4090's need a good quality 1KW PSU. 5090's, with stock 600W TDP (and AIB OC versions likely being 700W+ with perhaps 2X12v-2x6 headers) mean 1KW will be cutting it very close.

I'd say 1200W would be a good capacity, giving you some buffer. It's not great to have a PSU running above 80% of it's capacity long term, as this increases head, noise and stress on the PSU and doesn't allow for sudden increases in power.

With the price of a 5090 likely to be £2k+, getting a low quality (non ATX 3.1) or low capacity PSU is like buying a a new Ferrari and putting part worn tyres on it, at least IMO!

You are right indeed! I found a listing showing the new 12v-2x6 connector! I was looking at the Corsair website and could not see it indicated on there.
I can't find it on their website either, but I saw a review on hwbusters, hence why I knew about it.
