Recommended foreign films

Mar Adentro is beautiful.
La Haine is a must watch.
Protege is a good Hong Kong movie.
I watched Persepolis recently and enjoyed it.

Baise Moi is vile and is one of those 'art for art's sake' type of films. We can get away with rape and filth in a film! Yay! Don't waste your time watching it unless you're into rape and other forms of sexual deviance and yuk.

Ok - got a few more from recommendations:

Central Station
Mar Adentro
Tell No One
Jean De Florette / Manon De Sources double pack

The nice thing about most of these foreign films is that they're generally below £5. I haven't bought an English-language film in months now, however I recently saw 'Papillon', an old Steve McQueen flick and... AWESOME.

Public Enemy no1
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1259014/
the best foreign film ive seen this year and i watch a lot,it comes in 2 parts and is a definite must see about the life of Jacques Mesrine a notorious murderer,he claimed to have killed 40 people and also took part in kidnapping, bank robberies, filled with fantastic performances from Vincent Cassel,Gérard Depardieu stunning.

Jean De Florette / Manon De Sources double pack

These are amazing. You have to buy both of these, in the double pack. Without a doubt one of the finest and fascinating stories told on film.

Tell No One

A good French thriller, without much violence but some nice plot twists and some urban culture.

How did you find Central Station caff? Great film IMO and a nice change from the usual Brazilian plots (gangs in the favelas).

Not yet seen! I keep pulling it out to watch then choosing something else. I promise to watch this week.

Watched the 2004 Russian "Night Watch" tonight. Great fim...

Is the sequel (Day Watch) any good?

People previously have mentioned "A Bittersweet Life" and "Bullet in the Head". I thought I had, too, but that must have been a different foreign film thread.

Anyway, you MUST see those two films - both absolutely astounding pieces of work.

Hmm, it's ok but on a first watch it seemed very disjointed - I watched it with a few mates and none of us generally have a problem following films but there were parts where all of us were left wondering what we'd missed to explain why X or Y was the case. Something might have got lost in the translation or maybe we just weren't concentrating enough but Night Watch seemed like the better film.

Here's one which is a bit different:-

La teta i la lluna

IMDB comment:-

Sweet movie about childhood and Catalonia

Not really the comment I would put but an interesting film.

Got this last week, and Memories of Murder which may have been recommended in another thread. Both look interesting, not yet watched.

Just watched this last week. I liked it! Not an overt "classic" but a definite must-see - a down-to-earth road movie that keeps you hooked.

Good suggestions everyone, keep them coming! We're getting a very solid listing of great and unrecognised films in this thread!
