Recommended ISPs.

Interesting thread. Looking for an ISP for our student house that I'm moving into in 3 weeks. Still stuck on an ISP - obviously we want one that's reliable, has a decent usage limit (I use internet radio a lot which chews through that quickly enough), but obviously can't be hugely expensive. Had been looking at Nildram, but seems they're not so good.

Eclipse seem decent, will keep them under consideration. Might be a stupid question, but what do people think of the "mainstream" ISPs like AOL? They're offering unlimited usage for a decent price.

Nildram are really good EXCEPT recently where I was with them, it was impossible to play online games due to insanely high pings ... but now I moved over to IDNET they too are having issues with high pings.

But Nildram are good if you just download :)

Any idea on the question in my previous post guys/gals?

Ive just got in from work, and ive been noticing that in the space of 30mins, my downstream margin has jumped from 17db, to 18, to 19, to 18, to 17.
An my upstream margin has jumpted from 12db, to 17, to 19, to 22, to 24.

Ive been told that sometime before midnight tonight i can expect my connection to drop out, and then i'll get to put my new details in for Zen.

What are the chances of Tiscali keeping my LineOne email 'running' for a while longer. Its gonna take me a while to make note of all the emails coming in and having them sent to my new address. Ive already got my importent emails, like eBay, paypal, amazon, ocuk, ect; going to my google account temporarily.

I just checked my main computer, and according to my router, im still using my Tiscali login, but im synced at 4096/448, and the downstream margin seems to be flicking between 3 & 6db, with the upstream locked at 18db.

Still havnt had a loss of service so i can change over to Zen though?

##EDIT##
Now the downstream has dropped to 2db. And then flicked to 1db. and then to 0db? Then back to 1db...and then strangly '2147483647db'!!! :p
Its seems to be changing a heck of a lot.

My router disconnected, and ive had to put in my Zen details to get the internet back.
Im synced at, according to my router:
Code:
DSL Status : Up
DSL Modulation Mode : GDMT
DSL Path Mode : FAST
Downstream Rate : 4096 Kbps
Upstream Rate : 448 Kbps
Downstream Margin : 1 db [b]sometimes spikes to higher values, like 5db[/b]
Upstream Margin : 18 db
Downstream Line Attenuation : 57
Upstream Line Attenuation : 31
Downstream Transmit Power : 0
Upstream Transmit Power : 0

According to a few speed tests, im downloading at 1.8Mbps:

I asume that within the next 2 weeks or so that the speed will go up?

Ive just got up this morning, and the downstream rate is now reading as '4288 Kbps', and a few speed tests read as 3.1-3.2Mbps.

Im gonna leave my Laptop downloading a 2.1Gb IBM update while im out today, while my main PC downloads a few Linux torrents.
Just to 'stress' the line.

Hi

think i will throw this one in the mix for all that looking for a good ISP .. been with them for 2 months after the Ace Internet fiasco & found then very good so far with a variety of packages available .. no throtterling or shaping as yet and they own their own centrals so are a true ISP in that sense

https://www.blueleafinternet.com

they offer a good referral system too of £1 of for every referral for the time that referred person remains connected so in thoery if you recommend enough peeps you could have a free connection forever as the £1 is every month not just a one off :) ... only drawback is a 3 month contract on migrations or 12 month new connections

i recommend them even though ive chosen to try Telewest Cable instead as my phone line is a bit dodgy & SNR fluctuates far too much for stable MAX

I dunno, that's not exactly cheap, they're for a 12 month contract too.
£35.99 is £1 more than Ace charged for 'uncapped'. They're now on 40Gb/month. Unlimited on BT IPStream can cost £100s a month to the ISP. It's just not feasable.

Fair one, although some companies got away with it. I think the main problem is the introduction of max, which has increasd the download limit from about 600gb to like over 1.2Tb.

Just got in from work, and its now reading 4256kbps. So slightly down from before.
Speed checkers report between 1.8 & 3.2mbps, but all with a ping of over 200.

Does this, and the previous information sound about right?

If you want a truely uncapped 8mb line it will cost you at least £60 per month.

I bet if you still downloaded 24/7 it would end up costing the provider.

anyone use this isp?

According to Adslguide.org they are good, just done a compare with them and AOL which im on, they hammer AOL in everything, and i think AOL's great, so they must be good, you can also browse the newnet forum over there to find out user opinions. :)

I replaced one of the Microfilters on my extensions with a 'better' one, and for a few hours i got more stable downstream margins, but then it spent a few hours as erratic as before.

Im toying with the idea of buying a ADSL Master Filter & some of those fancy ADSL filters for the extensions. Worth doing?

If you buy a filtered master socket, you don't need filters (unless you're connecting the phone extensions to the unfiltered ADSL side, which defeats the point of the filtered master faceplate).

So, my setup, which has the master socket, then a splitter, which has 2 cables, one goes to a filter with sky/phone in it, the others an extension to a bedroom, which has 2 connectors, ones a filter w/phone, the other the 2nd extension, which goes to my room, where theres filter with phone & router plugged into it.
So i wont need the main filter, just some micro filters?

Would you recommend getting those XF-1e filters (i think thats what they are called), or should i just stick with what i have?

##EDIT##
Just got infrom work, and although MSN Live has disconnected (might have done that anyway, its not the most stable, so it might not be a line disconnect), the DSL speed is stil at 6db/17db, but the speeds gone up to 4480 sync.
