Im still waiting for them to give me my MAC. 5 days they said!

They're spinning you a line. Keep pushing them.

Would i be better off going for a 1Mb Unlimited line rarther than an ADSL Max one? I get the impression that the line will be more stable and more likely to have laxer usage policys on it? (due to the reduced speed).

If you can't get as far as a 1728kbps sync rate, you wouldn't see an advantage from Max over home1000. Bear in mind you've got the normal limits for home1000 though.

Question though, if i set my Tiscali account to upgrade to the 1Mb, does it reset my 12 month contract at all? So i'd be stuck with them at 1Mb for 12 months

I'd expect so.

If your having trouble getting your MAC code from Tiscali (which i did to, as mine never appeared in the 5 days either), then do what i did join the forums, go to the BB service/support section and PM one of the MK's (Tiscali staff, try MK Andy as he sorted mine) your details, and they will send you your MAC code, or you could start a thread asking, and then one of the MK's will PM you asking you for your details when they see your post, but they only go on there from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, so it won't be sorted this weekend, but at least you will get your MAC. :)

Thanks.
I'll try that now. I'll PM him and hopefully he'll get the PM on monday..

Im just stuck with ISPs now. Tolien has, again, put me off an ISP that looked good. ;) :p
So im unsure on who to go with now. :(

Max of £35 a month, preferably £30.
At least 40-50Gb peak usage.
'Unlimited' off peak usage.
No traffic shaping.
Email.
Webspace.

Theres plenty that fit those specs, but everyone that starts out looking good, allways has some problem with them. :(

Ideas?

With Zen, is the usage limit that they have on their website just applicable for peak times? Or is it just for all times?
Its not clear on their website.

I think im gonna go with their Zen 8000Pro package, £35 a month, 50Gb limit.
Seeing as the contracts only a 30 day one, i can see how i manage with 'just' the 50Gb to play with.

Any thoughts on Zen then?

Aye Zen is good :D

You can get a Mac code to move from Zen LLU to wherever you like. (assuming the other ISP can handle it) and you can give Zen a LLU Mac and you will be moved back to IPStream (BT).

No contention on the centrals or the internal network, no ports blocked or throttled and a nice News Server, tech support is also very very good ;).

If you can afford it and do not mind the cap then it is the best option. It isn't really that expensive if you consider the 8IPs in my opinion but if you don't need them then maybe it is a little less attractive.

As for 50GB not being much I can undertsand where you are comming from considering how much you could download in a month on a 8mb line. But how many months could you download 50GB legal content for and also Toilen I am sure you are aware of the cost to the ISP due to BT Wholesales pricing. So lets not get in to that debate that is for another thread maybe.

It should probably be pointed out that iamgud is Zen staff, though there's no denying Zen are (mostly) decent.

Huh?

Though:
No contention on the centrals

Given you're sure I'm aware of the price of a BT Central, you must be equally sure that I know that claim is drivel.
Both in the literal term of the word (there isn't enough Central capacity for every user to simultaneously max out their connection, so there's a "contention" for available bandwidth) and in the use that's normal banded about (some users don't see full rate, and it's not always the fault of BTw).

have to give Zen another vote TBH. Great speeds, great service, once had a problem with line which was dealt with very quickly indeed and i was migrated in less than 48 hours. Cant fault that :)

hehe sorry Tolien not you.

Oh yes and congestion not contention.

I would also say the if there are every any problems with speed it is more to do with load balancing.

I work for Zen and I honestly recommend it, but it is a good idea to look into what LLU you have in your area first.

I am drinking beer (not at work now).

How do i go about finding what LLUs are in my area then?
The traditional route of 'samknows' has been pretty much voided by Tolien. :p
I get the impression of you lot that being on a Zen LLU isnt that bad, that its not different than being with a 'normal' ISP?

Whats the difference between the Zen Home & Office package.
Their 8Mb/50Gb Home is £35/m, where as the office version, which is seemingly the same, is £30/m ?

Just need to give Tiscali another kick now to get my MAC code.
I know they are lieing to me because ive asked for my MAC in the past and got it strait away, over the phone.

Yeah i was told 5 days for my MAC, and suprise, suprise it never appeared, so as said i joined the forums and got it straight away from the MK' staff, once they see it you'll get your MAC no sweat. :)

Im still waiting for the forum activation email from them to come through.
Until then, i cant ask them to do anything. :(

##EDIT##
What rubbish forums. It says im logged in at the top of the page, but if i goto post, it says im not. So i click on the login link, and it takes me back to the main tiscali home page!

##EDIT##
Ive reregistered with a different email. Now its letting me log in, but now, event though it says im logged in and access my forum CP, i cant do anything because aparentely im not logged in!!! What sort of #### forum software are they using that can mess up something as simple as a login routine!

If i cant get on and PM that member you mentioned, im gonna ring them up on monday, and if they give me the same rubbish as before, im gonna complain and ask to speak to their superiors. Im really starting to lose my rag with Tiscali atm.

Zen is an exellent ISP, good Support also a very good BB service, was with them for quite a while, only contacted Support for one issue and that was not related to the actual BB service, but in setting up a web site on the free webspace.

High recommended. :)

It is just -VAT as it is aimed at businesses. still the same, not increased upload like the Office 8000 MAX.

LLU just means better pings and ADSL2+, we can also directly control the speed rather than having to rely on BT. No BRAS problems either.

Oh yeah i forgot about that, you can't post etc... after the first e-mail, you have to await a 2nd e-mail from one of the mods approving your account, i didn't get my approval till the following day.

When you click the link in the first e-mail it takes you to the forums, and you should have had a message telling you about now you have to await approval from one of the mods, which is another e-mail.
