A friend of mine has an old laptop hard drive which has been replaced. However it's got the Win32.Zafi.B worm and she wants the data from the drive.

I have a 2.5" IDE enclosure, but I want to minimise the risk of infecting my own machine.

I don't have the time to install a linux distro and I'm unaware of any other methods of attaching the drive without risking reinfection.

Cheers :)

If the machine you want to copy onto has decent anti-virus then just perform and in-depth scan of the drive and delete any files that cannot be cleaned. There's little chance of getting infected by any virus that is known about, only issue might be some unknown virus (chances of that are v.small).

I'm only running AVG but I'm not silly enough to click links in unfamiliar emails etc which is why I've never needed any more protection. I'll have a look around for something a little better.

I use Kaspersky at the moment, OcUK are selling cheap OEM versions. Works well for me. Last I used was Bitdefender but have gone off that now. Obviously you don't want to be executing any files on the infected disk, nor copying them across, until it's been cleaned. Real-time protection will prevent you copying an infected file anyway.

when i used AVG free it didn't offer any real-time scanning. i'd reccommend you use Avast! instead.

if you do want to use linux, Ubuntu comes as a "live CD" which you can boot to as though it were installed, and you could use that if you wanted.
