Seem to be posting constantly recently.

My WHS 2011 server recently had an issue and seems to have corrupted my 2tb WD Elements hard drive which i was using as a backup.

I've plugged it into another pc and its telling me that the file system is corrupt. Is there anything i can do to try and recover the data from it?

I'll give those a go tonight, i did run the WHS 2011 error utility (i believe the same as chkdsk) which gave me the file system corrupt error. Although i'll try again tonight.

Annoyingly i've just bought a USB3.0 dock but it seems that it only works with freshly formatted drives so not sure if it will read my hard drives :(

Cheers, will try with my Icybox docking station tonight when i fit some new drives into the server.

Hopefully if i combine with some recovery software it won't matter that the drives are formatted

While the drive could be totally dead (it's always possible), before using chkdsk, I'd try a linux CD.

I'm a great believer in using live LinuxCDs for this kind of thing since the NTFS and FAT support in Linux works entirely differently and often times Linux can read stuff which Windows can't.

If you do get access, make sure you have a destination at hand and priorities the files you want back (although this advice is really more aimed at drives which are physically failing of course).

Thanks. I'm fairly sure the drive isn't dead just corrupt. I try using my Icybox dock but it just doesn't seem to register it in WHS, which might be more the functionality of the OS as new drives aren't recognised till you format them and set them specifically as WHS drives.

Might try it on my laptop, with W7 as it might register it better. Will get a Linux boot cd made aswell.

Right, got the drive (1 of) connected to my laptop. I've set it running chkdsk and it started off running great. However for about the last hour its been sat like this

Its not crashed or stopped responding but it just hasn't moved on past this stage. Any idea what the best course of action is?
