Just had a text off a mate and apparently he was copying some stuff from an old laptop to an external drive but the laptop gave up the ghost in the middle of copying things over and now when he plugs the external drive into his new laptop it's not recognised and windows wants to format it, any recommendations on what to do or what programs he could try to pull the data off?

I use getdataback

Really good :)

Got me and family members/friends out of crap when they have deleted there data/formatted or even have problems reading the drive, as long as its not machanically buggered this software should be good for your needs.

Just remember always take the drive out, put it in a machine as a second drive, run software from that machine and run necessary scans.

Cheers for the recommendations guys.
He only has a laptop and I've not got a desktop setup he can use, would just hooking it up as usual through usb cause a problem?

Was about to suggest those very two..

Usually works better over USB as it doesn't seem to cause as much system instability when there's a duff drive connected as removable storage

Obviously it's slower over USB, but this is the method I use
