Recovering deleted data from SD card

I still cant quite get this. Why would it need more than 1 pass. Quick example:

If a disc has a file which takes up 10 blocks and the file is deleted then these blocks are overwritten ONCE, either by a eraser program or by another file, how is it possible to recover the previous file?

If someone can show me then I will believe it but the practical and common sense side of my brain states that it is not possible.

With a HDD this is correct, and the linked article shows it.

With a SSD and some other sorts of flash memory (may apply to some storage cards) not all blocks are visible to the OS so you cannot overwrite in the same way. However, with an SSD there's an ATA command to erase them.

Hi All,

Bringing up and old thread here through the search and i hope someone can help.

Im currently on honeymoon and run into issues with my camera memory card. My camera will no longer read it.

Does anyone know if Testdisk or Photorec can be used to recover the photos?

Many thanks,

Mike

Unfortunately neither the camera or PC reads it / detects it. Which means that of the programs i tried above, none of them worked.

Ive found some data recovery specialist companies though im not sure what exactly they do and the fees can be high.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Far as I'm aware if its not detecting there isn't much you can do yourself SD cards are a pain as when they stop working they generally stop working...

Feel free to try an actual company however or at least call some of them up

So just as an update on this, after many fruitless efforts using software I stumbled upon a specialist, who could recover data for a fee of course. The company are called RecoverFab and based in Germany.

I found the company through recommendations on other forums. Contacting them was simple and I described my problem. The fees are respectable and well worth it in my opinion. I shipped over my memory card and awaited confirmation of receipt.

The process they follow can be found on YouTube but it pretty much involves taking the card apart to directly read the chips. The end result is great!

Approximately 750 photos have been recovered for just over 200 Euros. (16 gb card)

I highly recommend them for any people having any sort of the above issues! :)

Mike
