I've been looking to cook some more delicate dishes and make them more appetizing with nice presentation. I really like plain white rectangular plates so I can space things out along them. The problem is they all seem to cost a fortune and I really don't have a clue what sizes to buy for starters, mains and deserts.

Can anyone recommend some decent ones for a reasonable price? They all seem to be coming in at around the £10 each mark for what looks like a decent sized dinner plate and I could really do without spending that much!

It's surprising, but decent plates are actually quite expensive. I'd say Ikea and John Lewis are your best bet. (John Lewis can be expensive, but they do have some lower priced ranges).

You could always improvise - delicate food in restaurants can be served on all sorts of rectangular things such as glazed slate, piece of glass or wooden chopping board

Rectangular plates aren't really 'in' right now, so your options are somewhat limited when compared to a few years ago when they were all the rage - at least where the high-street is concerned, where trends dictate what gets stocked.

You'll still find rectangular serving platters, which can double up as plates, but they might be a little large for a starter.

John Lewis do a lot more in-store than online, but these are particularly nice. It's definitely worth heading to your nearest shop as they do have a decent range of Oriental-inspired crockery which is both white and rectangular.

IKEA also have some, but the finish is a complete pain to keep looking pristine. The matte effect on these scratches at the slightest pressure so you'll end up with metallic lines all over your plate which don't easily come off.

These are part of a larger range which have more size options - there's at least two which are quite long and thin, which are great for starters and serving canapés. This one is my favourite 'starter' platter from IKEA.

As for other places, eBay is always worth a look and I've got into ASA Selection plates from Amazon recently. This is my current favourite - great for desserts.

Nothing rectangular there.

This should be the only one in their current range big enough to use for a main course.

Entirely at odds with your orignal post I admit but, I recently got a dinner service made bespoke for under £400. 6 pasta/serving bowls, 6 dessert/breakfast bowls, 6 plates and 8 goblets, made in dishwasher/microwave safe stoneware. They were made by hand to our chosen design and glazed to our spec. If you compare this to say Poole or Denby china it is quite competitive and it feels nice to have your own crockery.

I've got a broom cupboard full of crockery and think I've spent about that much on the entire lot!

Can we see exactly what you've spent your hard-earned on? Or is there anything similar on the website you linked to?

I likey that a lot indeed. However I'm not sure on dark plates with food. It makes white pasta and bright coloured food pop. But it looks great without food on it.

Like the jars red(ouch at cost but it looks so nice) and colour glaze black by John Lewis as well.

OK thanks for all the responses. Basically they are all expensive so am gonna have to stop being a ***** and dip my hands deeper in the wife's purse ;)

So, what sizes would people recommend for:

Starter
Mains
Desserts

Thought I would spell that out as it goes without saying someone will come up with one for a course I've never heard of :D

I'm after square cornered rectangular plates with edges like these.
