A simple enough question I hope - what's the difference between a WD Caviar Green drive and a Caviar Red? I'm in the market for a 3TB drive (doubling my data storage from 2.5TB to 5TB by replacing my old 500GB), I like WD kit and there's an offer on the Red this week, but if there's a practical difference I can wait until the Greens are on offer again.

green is for low energy stuff like htpcs that get powered off most nights. Red is more for home server systems like nas drives etc, still energy efficient but a greater mtb for 24/7 use

Personally the reds imo are the better drive hence why they normally cost more, I suppose its a risk isnt it get the reds now as they are cheaper than the full price greens or wait and hope the greens get a decent deal at some point, either way both drives are gonna be good the reds for 24/7 over the greens but if your not doing that then pick whichever you fancy for the money when you need them

Pretty much as above, if you are going to be Raid'ing drives then Red's all the way as they have extra protocols designed for Raid, if you are going to be using them stand-alone then the Greens are fine and are also quick drives!

The only advantages on a Red over a Green for standalone use will be the extra warranty and maybe better long term reliability as they are designed to be on 24/7 :)

WD Red drives wouldn't be recommend in a non-RAID setup really, as it has time limited error recovery. In a RAID setup another drive will supply the data instead. In a non-redundant setup, you want the drive to try for as long as it can to get any data (usually).

Also depends on your budget and situation, my home NAS is on for a few hours a day tops so I went for the greens as over 4 disks it saved me £80.

I've just opted for 5 x Seagate ST3000DM001. The price difference between the Seagate and WD Red was pretty large when buying 5 disks.

Hi all

I wanted to buy the reds for my htpc which does not use raids but just storage. Would these still be ok. And are these the bet built hard drives at these prices. I used to buy Samsung f4 but now they are gone because if seagate who bought them

I want reliable and good quality drives. As I am just about out of space.

Thanks all
