Redex revisited.....

It's exposed to the exhuast gas via the EGR system. The residue on the intake valves is a mixture of oil from the PCV system and carbon from the EGR system isn't it?

You can all chip in a few quid each for the rolling road sessions and I'll see if I get the same results on my vr if you want :)

The valve head isnt exposed to any of the combustion process, hence it shouldnt be sooty

It's exposed to post combustion gases and residue which is inevitably going to contain some carbon.

the valve head on the intake valve is never exposed to exhaust gases.

the intake valve is only open on the intake stroke. it only ever sees fresh air (mixed with pcv junk) and only sees fuel if its an indirect injection engine.

none of the junk on that intake valve is exhaust soot

ok, no one likes a smart arse :D

Ive not heard of it being a problem for petrol engined cars. Can you post up some links to information? I wasnt aware of it being one

If anyone thinks that Redex/Seafoam/Terrclean will magically remove carbon deposits built up over thousands of miles they are sorely mistaken. Try decoking some old valves and you will soon realise just how difficult the carbon deposits are to remove.

Terraclean uses a different process according to the manufacturers. Can't say that I've heard of anything known as 'columbic fractionation' though (and neither has Google) and I can't see how it cleans the catalytic convertor....

Terraclean is only getting in via the fuel system too, so won't reach the intake side in any significant amounts. Even seafoaming via the inlet manifold doesn't get the intake valves clean.

A Walnut blasting engine De-Coke is used on modern Minis that get gummed up, so to stop this happening rev the dam thing to the red line every so often.

I saw a bottle on the discount shelf at Tesco for £2.50 so got it and fed it to my 1.8 focus mk1.... after a week I can say it does feel a little more smooth accelerating and idle is now smooth as silk where before it was a little juddery. The car is a 2001 model so I guess a redex every ten years must help lol... there was some smoke for the first 20miles or so then nothing.

After the Terraclean treatment a few weeks ago, I got the dealer to throw in some Forte fuel treatment and a Forte oil treatment in with oil change. No harm in a cleaner internal engine than a dirtier one... :D

Been getting some interesting motorway mpg results (measured from fixed junction to fixed junction with cruise set for whole journey):

London<M1>Leicester - 50mpg (60mph)
London<M4>Bristol - 50mpg (60mph)
London<M4>Bristol - 42mpg (70mph)
London<M40>Oxford - 42mpg (70mph)

All an improvement on the pre-treatment mpg. Not bad for 195bhp petrol car!
