Redundant after 27 years

That's a real shame. Stoke really is becoming a black-hole for employment.

If you need some work for a few months until you find the right job then I'll find you something at OcUK.

Nice one, very generous :)

Really sorry to hear about this. :(

You seem to be in a stable-ish situation at the moment. With little extras like Spie's insanely generous proposition, you seem like you should be back on your feet again in no time. :)

Genuinely sorry to hear that DMP, but good to hear that your mortgage is sorted and that you still have an income. I reckon you'll get something much better in the long run anyway.

Sorry to hear about your job mate; take the time to look for something that will interest you as well as provide an income.

Spie's offer is very kind and will enable you to take the time to look.....

Best wishes for you and yours for the future. :)

It sucks that you put so much of your life into a company and they one day just tell you thats it. Businesses could do a lot more to councel staff through the trauma of redundancy.

I'll probably be out on my ear at the end of the month from my current role but then as an IT contractor I'm used to it. I've not been out of work longer than a few months in the last 31 years.

I'm sure something will turn up for you.

Well done Spie, very nice of you that.

Unlucky Dm, take the redundancy money, and buy your self a nice Les Paul Custom to cheer you up! :D

I spent my university placement last year as a designer within Indesit at the Blythe Bridge factory and this announcement doesn't surprise me.
Staff were laid off and temp staff drafted in on a month-to-month basis depending on immediate demand.
Moral I felt was not great when I started and hit an all time low when white collar jobs started going in the design offices. I understand the march for economic reality but it’s a pity as Stoke could really do with some big employers like Indesit.
Basically when you are bought out by a foreign company, your interests and you job in the long run are screwed.

Thanks Mark, you have restored my faith in humanity (yeah, but girlie stuff aside!!), that's a damn fine thing to offer, respect before, much respect after!! :D

I really can't think what to say other than "Tough luck, I do feel for you".

It's happened to me (with a much smaller firm) and the only lesson I can offer you is to say that it's not personal, it isn't your fault.

Take up Spie's very generous offer and use it to explore other opportunities, you never know where it may lead. After 27 years, change may be more of a blessing than you think it is today.

Good luck.

Thanks everybody.
I suppose I must be grateful that a company has given me 27 years of work which is very rare these days.
Since I live a stones throw from OCUK I've always fancied working in there so if the offer is open come 2008 then I may take Mark up on it - its very generous.
Sometimes I wish I'd taken offers up I had in the last 3 years -
Prison escort
Gasman
Singing with rock band Nazareth.

Unlucky DMP. I'm sure you know what your entitled to in terms of support looking for another job from Indesit. Who knows it maybe a blessing for you. Good luck which ever way things go

That's unlucky bud.
All the best when the time comes to find a new job.
In the meantime, why not look at some courses or something to help your new career (whatever it may be).
It's a very generous offer from Spie if it's required.

something really needs to be done about foreign outsourcing, this country will end up third world if we keep chucking businesses abroad like we're doing at the moment :(

Manufacturing will always go to the cheapest option as consumers demand cheaper prices, who don't seem to care where it comes from now either. Also, the UK taxpayer doesn't want to subsidise business too much so these companies will go where they think they'll make more money. As this is an Italian-owned company it makes sense for the company to move production to lower costs given the current situation in the UK with the strong Pound.

It's sad when someone is made redundant after so long with a company though.

You're a top bloke Spie. :)

@OP, what was your job there? Is it something you could do as a self-employed contractor? As said above, it could be the start of something much better.

Good luck.

Ouch, similar thing happened to my dad.

Worked for a company since he was 18, one year before he retires at 55, he gets made redundant, as the company was bought out and they didn't want to shell out for what would have been a massive pention.

As a result, he only got 20% of what he should have :(

R400,000 is a hella lot less than R2,000,000
