Marketing and GD always first to go :( sorry to hear your news.

On a postive though... 'best' part of the year to start it as recruitment is picking up.

I'm a freelance web, graphic designer plenty of us out of work too :(
What's your calibre (i.e. how does it compare to the decent stuff on Dribbble)? There's literally no good designers (especially UX and app designers) - they cost a fortune in London and San Francisco and many technology startups are hiring remote workers because of the shortage.

Maybe start exploring different circles, like Dribbble/the tech startup community?

Web design is competitive I'm afraid, even back in 2002 when I was applying for related jobs. Ended up as 1st-line tech instead. Even tech support is competitive nowadays :(
I think if you consider yourself to be a 'web designer', then yes... ten a penny now. The web has moved on from the early 2000s; the artform and the value (which attracts money) is not designing a page for content, but designing fantastic user experiences and interactions.

well i say web designer as that's what I've been doing over the last few years but I've been a games developer, 3d artist, lead designer for a few software companies over the years did games on the PS1, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, Wii, Mobiles etc i just got fed up of being made redundant lolz i thought i'd be safer going into digital design

Well i have to apply to the government for the redundancy pay which can take up to 6 weeks! But i'll start looking for work asap

Plus the worst thing is when you get it from the Governement its capped at £400 p/w.

Went through all this a couple of years ago when the architects i worked for went under.
