Whats the difference between standard intermediate and expanded on the Xbox360 dash?

Anything to do with colour as I am trying to set RGB 16-235 rather than full 0-255.

Cheers

Just leave it at Standard for studio levels if you have your TV configured correctly then there is no need for anything else, Expanded is mainly for VGA connections and PC monitors.

Intermediate is I think something inbetween and probably only a benefit to those who haven't set up their TV properly.

Problem I am having is due to the filtering of my Amp that filters out the non-limited range RGB.

For example:
On Expanded on GTA4 the map has a clear defined edge between the map (grey) and the background (black) when the hdmi lead goes straight to the TV.

When it goes through the amp the filtering removes the Blacker than black range (aswell as whiter than white) meaning it loses that detail and you get black crush.

Ive played around a bit now, seems it is ok on standard (Probably limited RGB) however the picture seems to lack the colour range of expanded. Ho Hum. Seems Yamaha need to understand the HDMI spec better next time they bring out an Amp :(

Yeah it sounds like your amp only supports studio levels which is understandable really, can you not just turn up the colour on your television or tweak brightness/contrast etc?

I've tested both Limited/Full (PS3) and Standard/Expanded (360) on my TV and when it's set to receive the correct signal they all look the same to me.

A lot of people tend to prefer the look of Full/Expanded even though their TV doesn't support it, but you do get the black crush as you mentioned because it's not correctly showing.

I'm not sure about 360 but with PS3 on RGB full you actually lose blacker than black and whiter than white, because all it does remap/stretch the limited range (16-235) to 0-255 for monitor support - as far as I know anyway.

As far as I'm aware it has no purpose other than to allow users to set a "preference", which is ridiculous as the other two options have a purpose.
