Refused for test drive :-(

Over the past year I've test driven:

- Most modern 1, 3 and Z BMWs
- VW Golf R and Scirocco
- Lotus Evora and Evora S
- Ferrari 360 and Maserati Quattroporte

...yet i've been refused to drive an Audi A3 AND a Land Rover Defender.

I've only been refused two test drives. The first was a second test drive on a mk2 Prius. I'd turned up with the wife, toddler and car seat to make we found one was liveable. We'd phoned the main dealer in advance and they knew we were coming.

They'd taken a copy of my licence and I was just about to get the family loaded in when the branch manager got wind that it was a second drive and refused unless I was willing to tell him that I was very likely to buy that particular car.

The other was a used Octavia 1.6 tdi Elegance. In discussing with the salesman I'd let slip that I'd been given a decent price on a new one from a broker. He said that given the price he wasn't going to let me test drive it as he couldn't see me buying the used car when I had the chance of a new one for a price he couldn't match. That time I just found out when the guys day of was and came in to see another salesman.

If I got refused for a test drive, I'd walk out and find another dealership. I'll report back what happens when I go to the Porsche dealership on Monday in my jeans, band t-shirt, and lip rings, after I win the lottery tonight :p

In fairness if he's a young looking 25 year old like a lot of people then I can understand why he got refused, average buyer, company car driver for an xf will be at least 40 I would have thought, I've driven a few xf's in my old rental car/ delivery Job, they arnt worth the extra outlay over an older e39 IMO, I'd be looking at a used merc e class, better built with better residuals if I was looking to spend 20k +.

To the poster who mentioned focus st, that really isn't a fair comparison I've been in many empty ford dealerships, they'd be happy you'd walked in the door and many showrooms are in need of a refurb especially the Wigan one if anyone has been there:D

I mentioned the Focus ST, because I wasn't in a Ford Dealership, was an independant used car place, where the ST was one of the most expensive and powerful cars he had, so me turning up in a clapped out S reg Mk.4 Fiesta at 22 in my normal garb and just being given the keys to the car and told to go, without having him sitting next to me making sure I wasn't a tyre kicking test pilot was a bit of a surprise to me, was expecting to be told to Foxtrot Oscar and I 'm not covered to drive due to my age.

Its people like you that cause the problems the OP faced. Test pilots with no real intention of buying...:p

Maybe he saw the thread you made 6 months ago asking about mark 3 mondeos :p

:D Maybe he did.

I've been in 2 minds about the sort of car I wanted for ages. Whether to replace my Peugeot with a cheap run around, keep the Peugeot or just purchase a car that I actually really want. Then I got a promotion and decided the 3rd option was best for me

You test drove a 360? Why? They dont make them any more and surely you woudlnt buy a used car? I mean just think, you'd need to buy tyres?

Why do tyres keep coming up? What have i missed?

He popped in some poor guys spec me a £4k car thread with an enormous tirade on why everyone who buys used cars is being cheap and you should buy new cars, because his mate once bought an Evo and it needed 4 tyres. Or some other such massively hilarious reasoning, but he definately quoted tyres as a reason to buy new, not used, multiple times :D

I test drove a dealer S2000 at 23 (now my S2000) and they required someone over the age of 25 in the car while I drove it.

No idea why, they said insurance but I suspect it might just been a check to see if I was serious enough to find someone and bring them with me at the prearranged date.

I did buy it 10 minutes after the test though :D

Fox, how the HELL do you remember all this stuff? I've the memory of a goldfish when it comes to forum posts, god knows how you do it.

Honda were great about test drives just gave me the keys no dealer required on test drive.
VW were stuck up gits who refused a test drive in a used mk5 when I even had my dad with me.
BMW were great gave me a lengthy test drive in any bmw I fancied but with the dealer present.
Arnold Clark (lol) had to come with me test driving a Volvo diesel.
Volvo gave me the 48hour weekend test drive the offered a few years back.

Seat would only allow me a ride along even though I turned up in the Type R wanting a cupra R he was the most insane driver on the back roads I ever seen so much so I pretty much thought we were going to roll it :D
