Register for Windows Home Server Beta 2

and what wil that do to the average household, do you honestly think they will use it,the peeps looking at that, will want it to stream movies/mp3s and to share the odd files, centralised backup, that will be a fad, acronis is good enough and simple enough to use, you can uce compression already, grant it ti is most prob not the same as that but nietherless compression. and i also bet you will see soem of those featuers apear on vista, wasnt they working on a new filesystem for vista, wonder if the compression technology is part of that.
also corect me if im wrong, most of the new nas external usints you can now do the media sharing part, at a lot cheaper cost, so again, what will be the point

Didn't you get accepted for the Beta then?

im having great fun with this, im actually tempted to buy a better box (my server is too noisey and doesnt have SATA ports in)

Would you lot trust putting loads of files on a beta version of a server? its built on Win2k3 server which has been around a while now, so I cant see any massive drastic problems?

i'm thinking of that too, am thinking of all in one, usenet/bit torrent, Nebula digiTV pci card broadcast TV across the network :D

i didnt apply for the beta, im already running a linux server and a windows 2003 server so i dont need another one lol

Fair comment. I just wondered why you are so against WHS yet seem to be into servers in general.

not agianst it so to speak, i jsut think its way to much for the average home user, liek i said its just a glorified media server, but to be honest the price of windows 2003 server is it realy worth it not to mention, micorosoft have hineted it wont be on cd format, ie you will have to purchase a box contianing it.

Doesn't it depend on the interface if WHS is way too much for the average user. I imagine if the interface is intuitive enough and is laid out in a logical and clear manner I imagine the home user would find it quite a useful tool to have a centralised backup and reference point.

No doubt WHS interface is going to be a lot different than Server 2003 and a lot easier to configure than Linux.

Personally I can see a market for a machine that you constantly leave on and can access music, pictures, documents on from any computer in the house. Especially one that doesn't require all the hassle of setting up Server 2003 or configuring Linux.

windows and linux used to be very difficult to set up , now with the advent of of search engines such as google and forums, and ebooks, they are not that bad to set up with plenty of help like this forum for example, but yes i do get your point. and hope your write, but then it doesnt say if the homeserver is also going to be able to serve webpages and look after domain names ect.

why would a home user want to offer domain names? most of them wouldnt even know what one is.

you might be able to get round running WHS as a webserver, I thought that the desktop on the PC will be locked down so you cant actually access it, you can probbley install IIS, maybe they change the RC?

In Beta 2, WHS is near enough just a complex service that runs on Windows 2003 Small Business Server

Quick thread bump, got accepted into the beta today with an e-mail from Microsoft so looks like another batch going out. :)

Can everyone post the hardware specification they're using for this?

I think you are confused in what i meant. They woudlnt offer domain names, but might wish to purchase a single domain name for serveral reasons, one might be for a ftp server, its a lot easier for people to use an address than a ip.

They might want to run website, there own forum, private email, the list is endless.

there is no need to get around anything a simple lamp all in one program, such as apchetriad, just to name one, or you can just install IIls and mysql not that ahard to do realy.

i was just curous if they was going to impliment those sort of featers in was all.

Same. Haven't got round to the hardware yet, but it'll be on my old Abit BP6 server, with dual 500mhz celery's at 700mhz and 1 gb of sdram. Awesome machine :D.

i have just been accepted for this 5 mins ago and am currently downloading the full package as we speak. when i come to install this in the morning i will update the thread with the hardware spec of the machine.

thanks

Anthony

I'm not sure whether to put this on VMWare or stick it on my Epia M6000 server due to system requirements but since it's a beta I thought I'd give it a go. I'm surprised though that it's taken this long for Microsoft to offer a "home server" due to the increasing popularity of them amongst us geeks especially when running Linux. :)
