I've just bought a server motherboard and two opteron 246's. I intended ro overclock the chips so I've also bought a swiftech watercooling setup but i read the excellent memory FAQ on here tonight and learned that registered ECC is a no-no for overclocking. Is this still the case (the FAQ is a couple of years old) and if so i would really appreciate a recommendation for 2Gb DDR400 registered ECC.

Tanks in advance.

It probably overclocks as well as any other average memory. When I had an FX51 I was able to get 228MHz out of some OCZ RAM at the stock timings (something like 2-3-2 if I remember correctly).

I got 220MHz out of some Crucial ECC Registered PC3200 ram (2x256) at 3-3-3-8 1T (stock timings) and 230MHz out of some HP ECC Reg PC3200 (2x1GB) also at 3-3-3-8 1T (also stock timings)

Didn't try any further - just went to 220Mhz with the original kit to get an FX-51, then tried for a little higher with the 2GB kit
