Well if it was as clear cut as that I doubt it would have escalated to this and you would be asking about if any further action could come of it.

Clearly the full story isn't "My friend was driving along in their car and they got stopped and arrested for it but then got let off because the police just realised it was their own car".

Something really smells in here (I've had a shower(in water :p)).

I cannot comprehend why someone would get arrested for driving a car they legally own.

Why would you be locked up for 20 hours for car theft.

Either you stole the car or you didn't! I know the police don't have a great rep but even they should take less than 20 hours to work this out.

Yep, if you're the RK they'll quickly see your ID matches up against that. If you're not the RK then it's a quick call to the RK (who will be the finance company if the OP's friend is indeed the owner) and they'll give the correct name. Job done. Fair enough if the arrest was at 8pm say and they can't confirm anything until the morning, but surely they'd have some method in place to get around that?

Sounds like he took someone else's car without permission, they reported it and he got caught. They then declined to press charges for whatever reason and he's out 20hrs later.

Seems legit.

Say they were arrested at 19:00 on day 1. It takes a while to get them to custody and then booked in. Custody clock starts at 20:00.

Police still need to get a statement from the aggrieved before interview. For whatever reason they can't get hold of the aggrieved until the morning. So 07:00 comes around and they've been in custody for 11 hours already. They get the statement which takes say 3 hours including allocation of officers, travel, writing the statement and adding it to the system. We're now at 14 hours on the PACE clock. It takes a couple of hours for the solicitor to turn up and the interview takes and hour. We're at 17 hours. Another 2.5 hours is taken up by calling CPS Direct for advice where they say they won't authorise any charges and 30 mins to process the release. There we have it: 20 hours in custody.
