I doubt any officer would arrest someone for theft of a motor and then keep them in custody without unanimously valid suspicion. If someone has honestly spent 20 hours in custody under the whim of some police officer that's pretty ****ed up, so there is certainly more to this story.

Was the car reported stolen? If he's actually driving his own cars then he has nothing to worry about. It sounds like "your mate" has a habit of driving cars hes not supposed to be driving?

The vehicle legitimately belongs to my friend. I suppose is the more relevant question would be can the police subsequently accuse my friend of any other offence given that police have only 24 hours to investigate and bring a charge? Or is the case legally consigned to history now the time has expired? In the time my friend was held the police had every opportunity to investigate all avenues of crime and couldn't bring charge due to lack of evidence is the outcome that is assumed.

They don't have "24 hours to investigate" at all :/

My friend was given a NIP for driving without insurance! Not a biggie to be honest. Also has the moderator been banned yet?

Why would the moderator be banned? LOL

You must be new to GD.

My guess:

The Vehicle 'your mate' was driving was likely not registered under his name. If it was just no insurance and his vehicle, then it would have been a trip to the station and then after some paperwork, off home. Detaining him for 20 hours was probably to contact the registered owner of the vehicle. After it was decided that the guy had permission or that it was not technically theft, they let him go.

I hope 'your mate' takes the points and the small fine (or a disqualification of the license if deemed appropriate) rather than the hefty fine. Whether you agree with insurance or not, you should always be insured if you live in a society where the system is built around everyone being insured. I would rather 'he' (you) were not on the road

Uninsured drivers are a huge burden to law-abiding motorists and the insurance industry.

Uninsured and untraced drivers kill an estimated 130 people and injure 26,500 each year and these uninsured drivers add up to £30 to the cost of each car insurance policy.[1]

Around half a million motorists were handed penalty points for driving uninsured between 2010 and 2013 and the average fine for this offence was £312 in 2012.[2]

But that’ll be cold comfort if you’re actually hit by an uninsured driver, because it could mean paying an insurance excess, losing your no claims bonus and - if you don’t have a comprehensive insurance policy - having to pay for repairs to your car yourself.

Definitly drugs in the car.

The police dont only have 24 hours to investigate.

If the car has been seized and is seqrched and they find soemthing or it turns out the car has been caught by a speed camera or used for any other crime they can charge him with that with no time limit

Yes, i agree with this or similar, for example, if the car has been used by drug dealers etc it could be a marked car so when it flags up on the system from the registration it is then pulled over, if the police still have the car they are obviously looking into drugs could be hidden in the car maybe :)

OP is getting a bit buthurt it seems :)

The poll has been added my a moderator, not the original poster, and that moderator is going to be either demoted or banned as a consequence of site rule contravention.

Regards.

OCuk detectives now tracking OP and going through his FB photos to find a cheeky pic of a car license plate to look up and report to the authorities :D

Seriously cannot just be an insurance issue. They dont detain you for 20 hours for that. They must been trying to contact someone else, maybe the legal registered car owner?

No biggie? Are you prepared to pay us all the extra premium we have to pay on our car insurance because of uninsured drivers then OP?

Thanks. Bank transfer is fine and ive been driving for 10 years so about £400 should do it.
