Reliability of SSD's

So when I would usually leave my machine to go into a sleep state, with an SSD I should switch the machine off or leave it on? Surely powering the machine off would also prevent TRIM running? As for leaving it on, I'm not too worried about the power draw of an SSD but motherboard+CPU+GPU+RAM at idle must be more than just the RAM (all thats left on during S3 sleep, to my understanding)?

I suppose I should get into a habit of switching it off when my machine is not being used for 30+ mins, rather than being lazy and leaving it to go to sleep!

Sorry if I've made a mistake, SSD's are an area I'm fairly new to compared to other components. I've built quite a few machines, but this is my first foray into SSDs!

You're confusing "sleeping" the whole computer vs "sleeping" just the hard drive. Within power options you can power down just a harddrive, this is not recommended on SSD.

Sleeping the whole computer, as far as I am aware is fine.

Ahh! My mistake, you've saved me a lot of worry!

I have had 3 Vertex’s die (the first version) in a year and a half, so I went for 2 Crucial 300 in RAID 0 and I have a feeling that one of them is dying I have had them since December 2010, would I buy SSD now, NO, if the Crucial goes I am going to get another VelociRaptor and raid them.

But the Intel’s seem to be the best bet, as you don’t hear many of them dying; maybe I have just been unlucky:mad::mad::mad:

Regarding the SSD and setting it to sleep, is there a way to have the SSD never sleep, but allow the other mechanical HDDs to sleep after a set time? Will they spindown even if they are are set to never sleep? Looking in "Power Options" in Windows 7 shows i'm using the "balanced" scheme but only shows one setting for hard drives which I assume is for all attached drives.

I don't think there is an option to set each harddrive separately.

I have my harddrives set to sleep after a while including my Vertex2 but after seeing this I will set them to never sleep.
