I am looking for a 125cc bike as i have yet to pass my test and could do with some wheels for the time being.

whats the best bike around the 125cc mark for under a grand, reliability is the main aspect, but if it looks good and can do over 60mph that would do me, but the cheaper the better.

thanks

Andy

You wont get "fast" and reliable in the same engine mate im afraid, personally id go for the more reliable slower engines such as the CG125 or any 4 stoke singles out there, yamaha do a few as do suzuki (although these are quite old now) I had the CBR125 to learn on and to be fair when I get on one again (my brother now owns one) i still love it! He has an aftermarket can on it and I think it sounds better than my 600 did!!! Love singles. As for getting one for below a grand you will struggle unless its been down the road lots! Im sure you could pick up a half decent example these days for 1500 easily, infact im sure you could for less than that!

I paid £1850 for mine just over 2 years ago, this was 2nd hand but only had 600 miles on the clock! Sold it on 9000 later for a los of £250!

Fast, reliable and 125 don't really fit in the same sentence.

Fast and unreliable = RS125, Mito, RG125 etc
Slow and reliable = CG125, GS125 etc

I'd go for the latter, they still do 75 odd mph and won't kill you in 2 stroke bills.

ive been looking and i can get insurance (tpft) for £150 on most bikes, bar aprilia rs125 which is £240, fully comp being an extra tenner on both.

i know the aprilias can be a bit of a sausage to get parts for and have that good old italian reliability, but something like a cbr125 is surely not that bad?

how unreliable are these "fast" 125's?

That's a good price for the insurance! What's the excess?

The Aprilias pretty much need a full engine re-build after 5-6000 miles. The CBR's aren't quite that bad, but the engine is basically a tuned up CG125 engine. It makes it reliable, but not all that much faster for the premium it carries.

right i re did it and the cbr125 is coming out the same as the rs125 w/ £500 excess for full comp and f&t, the cg125 is £120 f&t with £75 excess or £140 x £500 for full comp.

i think ill go for a cg125 unless someone can advise me otherwise, does anyone know of any 1st hand problems with these bikes? or things that tend to have problems?

ta.

I've had mine for a couple of months and i've had no problems, they are like tanks.

Had one of these for about 12 month's which was a couple of year's old then. As said previously, they are built like tank's. Mine was eventually nicked and redesigned by the thieves
This is going back about 12 year's ago.

ah a '93 then, thats what i have been looking at on ebay, i reckon it will go for about £500 but not many older examples that ake my fancy atm.

do you think it would be worth gettign a newer one (post 2005).

Get an NSR125. Can get a slightly older model for around the 1k mark. Are fast (100 mph once unrestricted) and reliable from my experience with them.

The CG125 may be extremely reliable but it looks like total crud.

what about a DT125? i've heard there fast and reliable?

i also know someone who had a NSR125 that was very relaible and hardly any slower then a RS125
