One of the Pope's senior advisers has pulled out of the papal visit to Britain, after reportedly describing the UK as a "Third World country" marked by "a new and aggressive atheism".

Cardinal Walter Kasper, 77, made the remarks in a German magazine interview.

The Vatican said the Cardinal had not intended "any kind of slight", and was referring to the UK's multicultural society.

It added that he had simply pulled out of the Pope's visit due to illness.

The German-born Cardinal was quoted as saying to the country's Focus magazine that "when you land at Heathrow you think at times you have landed in a Third World country".

He also was reported to have criticised British Airways, saying that when you wear a cross on the airline "you are discriminated against".

Vatican sources said Cardinal Kasper was suffering from gout and had been advised by his doctors not to travel to the UK.

The Pope is spending four days in Scotland and England, starting on Thursday.

Gout of the mouth?

Can't argue with that, I think that every time I visit the doctors.

Third world because people aren't what you would call English?

What makes the service you receive at heathrow or the doctors 3rd world?

edit:

I can't even believe this bit

"The Vatican said the Cardinal had not intended "any kind of slight", and was referring to the UK's multicultural society."

multicultural society = 3rd world?

Really looking forward to ploughing through the mess that will be the next few days rush hour because of this visit  Why hold this event in the middle of a major city????? Plently of hills and fields outside Glasgow.

Shame.

Well at least we don't have to foot the bill now, well, pay the staff anyway, I'm sure money has been spent on planning.

What a couple of utterly pathetic comments  and a complete insult to people who genuinely have to endure the daily rigors of a third world country
You should be ashamed of yourself for agreeing with such a ridiculous comment!

Lol... not been on ocuk long have you?

No he's absolutely right, much of the UK is like a third world country.

I mean we all know of the poverty issues where people live in tin shacks and have no running water. And we all know that none of us have access to medical care, let alone first rate medical care. In these hard times the minimum wage laws in the UK mean that people work for less than it costs to live. We don't have a constant supply of fresh produce at our finger tips and nobody has any form of disposable income whatsoever so no one goes out for a night out or on holiday or buys electrical goods.

Now I realise you could argue the nuances of the above rant, but my point is to say that the UK is like a third world country is utterly utterly stupid, not even ridiculous, its just a stupid statement obviously made by a stupid, or at least blinkered man. I realise the media will have twisted his words, but the comparison must have been made.

To be frank, he is quite welcome to rot away his final days in his quiet little holy world where he believes in things that cant even be tested for let alone proved. Personally i'll stick with my modern melting pot society thank you very much, warts an all...

I AGREE!

I went to the doctors the other day and instead of having someone call out your name when it was your turn to see the doctor, an LED screen beeped and displayed your name! It's unbearable! The UK makes Somalia look like paradise! We truly are in the third world.

To conclude the story, after I saw the doctor and was treated, I drove home, went upstairs and had a glass of tap water and used the toilet, but let me tell you, I was so angry I almost broke the electric light switch!!

I'm happy to stand up for my beliefs in not believing in imaginary people

either that or people feeding 5,000 with a loaf of bread and a fish. I mean surely you can't cut the pieces up small enough :D:D
