Remains of the Soviet Space Shuttle

Lots of pics and info here. Shows the base as it was in operation...

Really? In what way?

many differences separate the 2 orbitors, here are some: the Buran shuttle have a higher orbital and deorbital carrying capacity, its 2 engines at the rear enables it to fly during the re-entry in the atmosphere, it is equipped with a more powerful heat shield, but the main difference is that Buran can fly in automatic mode without any pilot on-board, from the takeoff of the rocket to its landing on the tarmac.

Why is everything the Soviets made so damn cool? Even when they've blatantly ripped something off it's just.....cooler. I want answers!

Looking at that saddened me somewhat - all that effort wasted.. :(

The state of abandonment reminded me of the Pripyat photos that someone posted some time ago, to be honest.

IIRC the bran could put 100 tons in orbit because it had a larger bay and also its launcher could be configured differently. If they needed qit they could strap more boosters (liquid too not the more dangerous solid) and so it was a better option than the shuttle in that regard. I think the shuttle caps out at about 30 ton payload.

Ooohhhh wow... incredible photo's, kinda has that pripyat and six flags (new orleans) feel about them, beautiful!

Those are some great shots, and such a shame to see something that cool basically left to rot :(

It would have been great if they'd been able to at least offer the shuttle to a museum as it looks pretty amazing (and goes to prove that form follows function in how close it is to the US versions in basic shape/design).

If you look at these two photos below, it looks like the actual Space Shuttle itself is looked after, with all the new fencing and tidy gravel areas etc!

The actual shuttle that orbited the earth was destroyed in 2002 as the Hanger it was stored in collapsed. There were two shuttles built for space flight one was destroyed in the hanger and the other dissasembled. The other one that flew was fitted with jet engines and flown like a plane for testing purposes. There were numerous other mock ups built approx 9 that were used for testing and evaluation of the systems.

The saddest thing is that the Space Race was only done as a way to keep the population of USA/Russia happy during the cold war.
Wow, I could have sworn it was humanity's thirst for exploration, multiplication and evolution that kicked off the space race.

I'm quite surprised the Chinese haven't bought all that scrap yet, amazing pics though.

What an amazing site. There are so many abandoned places in Russia I'd like to go to.

Whilst we're on this subject, I saw some pictures of an olympic sized swimming pool on the top of some large hill that was deserted, I can't remember much about it, possibly somewhere in russia or maybe somewhere hot, I definitely remember some troops in the pictures.

I think your talking about the one in Afghanistan. The russian's built it and after they left the taliban and other groups used to hang people from the diving pool if i remember correctly

I fancy a trip to Pripyat... my friends think I'm weird. :(

Not planning to start a family anyhow so radioactive goolies won't have much of an impact on my life. :p
