Whoa those were the days.

Insert.
Install.
play.

Even better on the old consoles.

Insert
Autoplay.

Wow lets reminisce those magical days.

Remember those days when you had to search for patches, and spend ages downloading them, only to find out you needed another even bigger one to play?

I remember downloading a 1.4 patch to find out that it was actually a 1.3>1.4 and my game was 1.1 so I had to either download a 1.1>1.3 or search around for a 1.1>1.4

and then the days when you bought a game only to fidn out once you insert the disc you need the internet to actually download the game to install it. Then you need a special program to get the download to download the game to isntall it. Then another program to run the game from the isntall. Then a patch to fix the program to run the game then a patch for the isntall to update the game before the game is even playable.

And a spellchecker to spell install?

Who doesn't have the internet? Like 1% of the population? And I'd much rather have a "special program" to manage my games library and keep it up to date.

If you having day 1 issues with every single game you play, you need to sort your setup, they're far rarer than you're insinuating.

Run
Crash
Dick about with autoexec.bat
Reboot
Run again.

I actually remember the days when you bought games magazines, and they'd have the code for games printed inside. You had to type the code in yourself, and of course if it didn't run you were screwed.

I used to type in basic code into an old VIC20 when I was about 6 or 7, hundreds of lines of code and I don't think any of them ever worked. :p

That was back in the days of 12 minute load times from tape and playing space invaders while it loaded :)

I remember the days when you could buy magazines with entire game programme coding inside. I used to spend entire weekends typing it all in. They never bloody worked. :(

My memories go more like:

  • Insert Tape
  • LOAD ""
  • Press Play
  • Wait 5-10 minutes
  • R TAPE LOADING ERROR
  • Swear
  • Repeat until it's time for school, or you get a few minutes of gameplay - whichever comes first!

Happy days. Looking back, we must've had the patience of saints! :)

Nevermind that its ridiculous I bought fifa 12 and though I had the dvd the game didnt install data from the disc it connected to internet to download the data...wtf is the point of the disc they may as well sent me via email a download serial no.

^^ don't forget adjusting the tapedeck volume control from say 7 to 7.5 before repeating :)
Also 5-10 mins sounds like some sort of cheapo budget game, more like 20mins+ for something elaborate like Operation Wolf providing you had 128k RAM so it would load most of the levels.

i remember the days of all that the OP has put but i much prefer it now, click download via steam or some such then play with no faff of patches etc etc.

steam is ok espeially as it always seeks to auto update your games to latest patches.

Cant beat snes, n64 etc. though, cartridges, minimal loadign.

Two months down the line insert cd, unable to read.

I love digital media.

And as a few others have said

C64
Insert tape, wait 5mins, error.
